Here's a shot at 35mm taken with the 24-70mm Canon on a full frame camera body. It would be hard to imagine needing much wider than this:

So did KMC win? Awesome photo, and I noticed there is 3 seconds left in the 4th quarter with a tie game! Awesome timing!

Finally got out to shoot a game this weekend. I used my 7d2 with 70-200, I was wishing a bit to have had a 24-70 for some wider shots on the net. Hope its alright to post a couple.

70-200 II on the 7D2 for me, and the 7D2 does so well at high ISOs. I sit on the court, and sometimes though, the 70 isn't wide enough. I wish it was a 50-200 f2.8. :)

I'm in college and work for my school newspaper and the pros that sit next to me have this set up 9/10 times. 2-3 full frame bodies with a 70-200 f2.8 for sure and then a 300mm and/or 24-70. Since you have a crop sensor, like I do, I have a 17-50 which is like a 24-70 as well as a 70-200. I find 70 isn't as wide as I'd like it to be sometimes but I've gotten better at it the more I shoot. 16-35 is also a common lens if you set up a remote under the basket.

I use The 50 STM for youth Ice Hockey pictures. I had The 50 1.8 II but I dropped it on the ice and replaced it with the STM. I find it useful for wider situations, but I mostly use the 100 f/2 for it's better focal length, then the 24mm STM for wide angles. The STM is just about fast enough to focus, but not so consistent at f/1.8, so I mostly use it at f/2.5-2.8. I can't post pictures of the children.

I would think on crop, 85 1.8 if prime, if zoom Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS, although with the new Sigma 50-100 1.8 that might be best Zoom range on crop

I agree if the AF can keep up. I haven't seen any reviews or reports on it, yet.

I haven't shot the 24-70 or the 70-200, but the 85/1.8 has a fantastic AF... I can just swing to the action and click. And since the IQ is great, I can shoot way down the court and crop to get the pic I want. I've also got a 200/2.8 for when I have to sit way up in the stands.
