Bought a Samsung 850Pro SSD ~ Wow

On the many recommendations of others here on the forum I bought a Samsung 850 pro to replace the Sandisk Extreme SSD that I have been using in my Mac Mini as part of a Fusion drive. All I can say is WOW. My Mini was pretty fast before but the difference is noticeable. I only have the Samsung in an external case and even using USB3.0 it's miles ahead in terms of speed. I can only imagine how fast it will be with a full speed internal connection.

I've done a clean install of OSX and have loaded a few programs and will install it when I get a bit of time. Good stuff though. Worth the cost. Just throwing this out there!!

Sell your Sandisk Extreme to an Atomos user. Samsungs don't play nice with Atomos recorders!

I think i'm just going to toss it into the external to use as a backup or to transfer files.

Most of the speed differences is coming from the brand new install OS and software. Computer do get slower as you use it because more stiff are being installed and loaded. I bet if you format your Sandisk, clean install OS, you will notice a speed bump too.

Having said that Samsung 850Pro does have advantage over Sandsk Extreme, especially in random performance. So you may feel a bit more responsive. For sequential performance, both drive are limited by SATAIII interface, a few % of difference here and there maybe, but natively, one isn't much better than the other.

Yes the Samsung 850 Pro is fast. The Samsung 950 Pro is even faster, but the interface is PCIe, so it will only works in a M.2 slot....Fast is an understatement.

My interim back-ups are Samsung 850 Evos and I was very happy with them.
I didnt think there was much difference to the 850 Pro, but recently heard the Pro is faster than the EVO.
Is this true?

The pro is VNAND MLC. Evo is VNAND TLC. The only reason the Evo can keep up with the Pro is because Evo use SLC as buffer. Even wonder why the Evo series always come in weird capacity, like 120 or 250 instead of more tranditional 128 and 256? The missing capacity is mainly allocated for SLC buffer. For a fixed amount of data write, Evo's measurement is mixed between SLC and TLC. For a infinite length of data access, the Pro will pull ahead. For SATA interface, the difference is small because the interface efficiency is the limiting factor. The main advantage of the Pro, IMO, is the reliability and retention ability of MLC over TLC. If budget allow, get the Pro
