Looking forward to your comments regarding the comparison.

Jim

Jim, et al;
HERE (external link) is a page with a quick comparison of the AD600 remote head and an AD360 mounted in an S bracket.

Even without taking my CL600 out of the case, I know the AD600 head is smaller and probably lighter.

David and Shom,

You have me convinced, the AD600 it is. David you mentioned you would be confident in a 10 ft stand with these. Ironically I have every thing else. 12 ft, 7 ft, smaller versions and even a C Stand, etc. However for run and gun I guess something else might be required for this:)

I would like something small - if possible. The Matthews Reverse Stand is only 7frt but if you believe their specs capable of holding 11lbs. Does anyone have any experience with this stand or have another one to suggest. My C Stand is a Kupo and seems to be of excellent quality and my largest stand is a stackable Manfrotto stand which is great but too large for run and gun situations.

Thanks again.

Jim

Jim.
I've got 4 of the Calumet version of that stand. It will work with the CL600ET and small light modifier if you are careful. It has so many sections that it gets wobbly as its extended. I usually set it up with the legs just about flat on the ground to maximize footprint.
The 10 foot Calumet stands I have or even better the 10 ft Cheetahstand is light enough and strong enough to support a fair amount of weight at height without a concern. I use them regularly at receptions.

That thing looks really cool with the ability to have it a single unit or battery head separate, along with ETTL. I'd sure like to get my hands on one to test.

Can we connect the battery charger while shooting, or is there a AC adapter ? This would do a great on location and in studio solution !
Also, seems the AD600 is not less portable than AD360 with battery pack and accessories ?

Finally, Can I use the X1 for remote power control, and at the same time, another radio trigger in sync port for firing ?
Or does turning the ad600 in wireless mode will cut down sync port communication ?

What about turning on/off AD600BM modeling light from the X1 ?

The charger plug is just that a charger plug and not made to run the pack. Running with the charge pack can damage the charger and battery.

Never tried it but I think you can use both at the same time.

Rapid press the Channel button on the x1 will turn on the modeling light

Thanks, nice to see modeling light from X1 possible ;-)a

I've seen on different sources that an AC/DC power adapter should come soon, let's see !

Can anyone recommend a Bowen mount softbox that is rapid to setup and portable ? Around 80cm, being square or octa. For AD600BM.

Don't see why it would not be. It would be trivial to make a pack that contains a transformer with a standard power cord connector.

From what I've seen posted so far about this light I'm not sure it's needed. The number of shots per packs seems pretty high. If you are shooting all day long in a studio then a battery powered light may not be the right choice. The QT600II studio strobe is supposed to start shipping end of may. That might be a better choice. Get a vagabond or something when you need battery power.

As for a softbox, have you thought about a collapsable beauty dish? http://www.cheetahstand.com/product-p/qs33wbd.htm (external link)

With the front diffuser on you are looking at the same light as you would get from a softbox.

There are lots of options. Cheetahstand has several, as mentioned, start with the QS seriesHERE (external link).

Fotodiox has a selection of EZ-Pro soft boxes that have an umbrella type mechanism to make them quick and EZ to setup and collapse HERE (external link). One word of caution, if you get the EZ-Pro boxes, get the Bowens S mount adapter from Cheetahstand. The EZ-Pro adapter ring places the flash tube about a 1/2 inch farther back in the box. Which I think is detrimental to good light from the modifier.

Adorama has a series of Glow ParaPop boxes that are light, easy setup and collapse and some come with Bowens S adapter, others you can buy it as an accessory. HERE (external link) is an example.

And, Paul C Buff foldable soft boxes will take a Bowens S adapter. HERE (external link)

I have the 35" Fotodiox EZ-Pro and the PCB 47" Octa.

The Fotodiox is not nearly as well built. But it's a lot less expensive (for the same size). And, even though I do not think it will last as long as my PCB under the same use, I do use it more for location work because it is a lighter design, and easier to carry.

The PCB is excellent for the money. I find the PCB just as easy to setup as the Fotodiox. The Fotodiox has a grommet in the inner diffusion panel that needs to be aligned with the umbrella shaft. The PCB has a thumb screw that needs to be tightened internally. For both units, I leave the inner and outer diffusion panels in place for storage. For the PCB, I just open one (of eight) side of the outer diffusion velcro and reach in to secure the thumb screw (less than 1 minute to assemble). With the Fotodiox, it's like an umbrella but you pull the speedring into your stomach/thigh (with a bit too much force to be comfortable) to open it into shape.

Another benefit for the PCB is if you need to switch speedrings on the fly, you can, without tools. With the Fotodiox, you need a screwdriver and the attachment does not inspire confidence (it's loose, no-matter how you work it...).
