Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

I know it's a 5DS & 5DSR thread
but that 500mm f/4 has got to be one of the greatest lenses of all time.

Love this camera...always will, but I'm on the cusp of putting it for sale. Just wanting to scale back to a single camera and it's going to be the a7R II. Still, I'm hesitating...

This with the TS-E 24L II and the Lee Big Stopper:

David,

You can't sell your 5DsR....if you do, then I can't view your awesome work in this thread anymore!

Cheers,
Bryan

Thanks so much Bryan. :) It is a very painful decision and I could easily go the other way. I did a LR search this evening to see how many shots I've taken with each camera and it was about dead-even. Going to continue mulling it over; not going to rush into it.

[EDIT: Slept on it and am reversing my plan. In my mind I wasn't using the 5DS R as much, but my LR database proved me very wrong. I need both cameras.]

I'm trying to decide if I can use this camera to mimic a macro lens by using the crop function.

Anyone know how to do the math on that?

Let's say I'm using a lens with a .2 magnification. If I'm shooting in 1.6 crop mode, what's the equivalent magnification? It's not .2 * 1.6, is it?

with the new Tamron 85 1.8 VC

- went to the store 4 times trying this out as I was not happy the first three times
- final figured out the formula with this combo and the 5DSR - keep it in AI-Servo - does a better job of the VC being happy
- l really only want to use tack sharp lenses with the 5DSR - and this lens needed +10 - and during the first three visits i never tried adding that much
- my favourite 2 lenses on this camera are now the Sigma 24-105 F4 and now this Tamron 85 1.8 VC - between the balance, sharpness wide open and the IS, both are great
- believe it or not I traded in the 85L II and also bought the Tamron 45 - but I bought that for the 1DX II as a 50mm proxy
- the IS / weather sealed / close focusing combo works for me

this was shot as a jpeg with a few tiny tweaks (i'm experimenting with jpgs to see if I can make them work)
