I am looking to get a 580EX II to use with my 60D + 100-400 MKI for bird photography. I want to mount the flash on a bracket off and above the camera using a flash bracket (like this http://amzn.com/B00987STOK (external link))

My question is, would using a cable vis-a-vis the in built wireless flash trigger on the 60D provide any advantages to off-set the hassle of carrying a cable and the time to set it up?

I generally shoot at >1/1000 of a sec shutter speed (and high speed sync, obiviously) and also want to use the better beamer with the flash.

Thank you in advance for your input!

Heya,

I'd stick to cable. Here's why: batteries. More to carry, more to drain and misfire or not work when you don't want it to happen, and miss your shot due to it. Cable just works, no down time due to batteries.

I hope you're getting very close to subject(s). The HSS output even in a better beamer is not going to give you a lot of distance while keeping good enough output for fill light. Definitely not key light unless really close.

When I use flash on my birding setup, I use a cable. I've used wireless transmitters in the past, but again, it's just more batteries to fool with when you don't want down time in the field.

Very best,

The built-in flash won't do HSS as either a master or as a normal flash.

Another vote for an ETTL cable.

The optical system that the 60D uses "works" ... kinda, but it's unreliable. Especially when there's a lot of ambient light, or any sort of obstruction between the pop-up flash and the receiver. Get the cable.

Thank you all for your replies! I do intend to upgrade to the 7d Mark II this year, would the pros vs. cons remain them, too?
