Stunning.

Sad to see the old girl be grounded, but some fantastic memories from the members event and final tour fly pasts.

Louder then the F-4 Phantom?

Yep, it seemed like it to me. I worked on F-4's (several models) as well as several other fighter types. The Vulcan's volume at takeoff was almost painfully loud.

Good grief...I've only seen the F-4 fly twice, but it's been the loudest thing I've heard in the skies. Hard to imagine....sad I'll never get to see one of these birds in the air.

The Vulcan has four engines and they used to pull a particular move at shows with XH558 that was pretty much certain to set off all the local car alarms from the sound of the aircraft. Par of it was actually down to harmonics in the air intakes adding significantly to the noise. It was known as the Vulcan Howl. A similar sort of circumstance to the effect you can get from a North American AT6 Harvard (Texan) where the tips of the propellor blades can actually become supersonic. I have seen F4s both British with RR Spey engines, and US aircraft with I think it was Pratt & Whitney engines, English Electric Lightings with the twin RR Avons with reheat, Handley Page Victors, Jaguars, Tornados, Typhoons, Buccaneers, F111s, F15s, F16s, F14s and even Concorde flying both operationally and at shows, and I am certain that the Vulcan was the loudest of all. When I passed out of Royal Air Force Basic Recruit Training at RAF Swinderby in December 1983 we had a fly past by the Vulcan.

I was at the airshow at the Shuttleworth Collection that the OP referred to, which was the last full public airshow for the Vulcan, a great shame that we will never see the like again in the air. I would have probably been willing to sell a kidney or some other non 100% essential body parts to have had the chance to do air to air photos with the Vulcan.

Love them all, probably the best captures I have seen of the old girl.

Shame we won't be seeing her in the air again
