What would you like to know in particular? :-)

For now, they were all shot with the equipment listed in my signature.

How did you make the move from doing nightclub photography to massive festivals?

I sent you a msg on FB btw but figured I should join this forum also :D

Also a general question for everyone here: What wide angle lens would you recommend? Is it worth it picking up a 20mm-35mm F/3.5-4.5 over a 20mm 2.8 prime? For nightclub photography obviously

I was dead set on getting 3 primes (20mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8, and 85mm f/1.8), but I can't imagine I'd be able to change lenses fast enough when situations arose or if people came up to me asking for pictures

I don't have a picture to contribute to this thread just yet but will soon! :)

As with a lot of questions on here, the answer is problably "it depends". It totally depends on what sort of work you're doing and where you want to go. A know a few people who have a 20mm 2.8 who swear by it because it's wide, fast and sharp in a busy club environment.

If you're shooting a big festival or a bigger even then you're going to be pretty limited in the shots you'll be able to get with it though. I like to have a range of different type photos in my albums so the 24-70mm gets used a lot.

Nightclubs aren't the easiest places to change lenses around quickly. Even if you carry them round on you all night there's always the risk that someone knocks something on to your kit when you're changing or knocks something out of your hand. So like you say, a set of primes probably isn't the best idea to work with in a club.

If your end goal is to work in a festival then get your press pass applications in for anything and everything going that you can get to/interests you. There really isn't a substitute for experience. I did my first festival when one of the promoters I work for round where I live put one on. That's pretty lucky I'd say. Even though it wasn't that big (7000-8000 people), I pretty much AAA at all times and that gave me the freedom to try things out. As for the bigger festivals you can look into working for some magazines or local news papers. It'll probably be unpaid but the passes usually come with free entry and sometimes with free food and drink (Ultra this year had a free bar and sandwiches for press members! Bonus!)

From there I guess it's just like anything else in life. Network, network, network!

Deadmau5 recently posted a Q&A and recommended that everyone started taking their promo more "offline". Don't just spam people with albums and emails. Try get a face-to-face conversation going. There are plenty of things you can do to get noticed if you can get creative. ;)

Awesome thanks!

I'll probably try and grab a Tokina 16-28 f2.8 over the 20mm 2.8 then

For nightclub photography is there any use for the 50mm or 85 whatsoever?

The images will be resized for facebook/promotional use so I don't think cropping would be a problem

what about the Sigma 18-35 1.8.. wouldnt that be a good choice if your desired area is 20mm?

I know my 24-105 is not short enough for me but I opt for it as it is the shortest I have at the moment...

I find 24mm is plenty wide enough on a full frame sensor, even in a club. It can get a bit cramped at times, but you don't get all that ugly distortion at anything wider than that.

How did you guys find employment shooting nightclubs?

I've checked out every local nightclub page...they post pictures every week which means theres already someone doing photography there

Over here in the UK, pitching to promoters is usually how it works. If there's someone already working there then it's not the best practice to go in and undercut them or say you'll work for free. Not only is it a dick move, but it drags everyone else's value down as well and you'll find it quite annoying should you move further up the ladder over the next few months/years if people start doing the same.

Look out for new nights. New promoters. New clubs. Get your name out there. Those new nights are the best option you have to build your portfolio and get used to a club environment. The only way to get better really is by practice.

On Friday night I was asked to shoot DJ Marky. I've been waiting 10 years to see this guy in Calgary. Props to the Supreme Hustle for bringing this guy in! What an epic show. I have quite a few photos but I haven't watermarked them yet. I'll put up more tonight!

I am now a Calgary , AB resident, nice pic,, are you still doing events around Cal?
