Wow, thank you all for the responses! You have definitely given me a lot of good ideas and things to experiment with. Sounds like I definitely have some options related to assigning different functions between the AF-ON, *, and DoF buttons. I think the biggest challenge that some of you alluded to will be the "muscle memory" aspect. But, it sounds like it is definitely worth trying out!

Also many buttons are programmable. Custom controls - page 445 of the manual. Not only can you program the AF-ON and * buttons have additional sub menus called "detail set" - page 450.

I have both the AF-ON and * is set to Metering and AF start. When you press the info button detail set comes up.

I set AF-ON so AI Servo is enabled. I left AF operation and AF area selection modes blank becuase I like to use different settings depending on what I'm shooting.

I set * so AI Servo, 65 point zone AF and Case 6 are enabled. This is for emergency BIF.

Also program your multi-controller button to move the AF point/s around and AF Area Selection Lever changes AF modes. very handy.

This is great info! Not long after I got the 7d Mark II, I began playing around with some of the customization options and it seemed to work out very well in the short amount of time I have been able to use it. It is great to have so many options to tailor the camera to whatever your style may be, but can also be a little overwhelming. Just take it one step at a time!

Welcome to the forum. BBF is a useful technique, I try to use it via the AF-on button when tracking moving objects. I'm sure you'll enjoy your 7DII for air shows. All you need now is a 100-400mm IS II to go with it... ;)

I smiled when I read this as I just had my new 100-400mm IS II delivered today! I had the old 100-400mm but decided to go ahead and trade up. Seems like the new version will be a great match for the 7d Mark II!

Muscle memory is different for different people. It took me about a month of shooting on weekends to get used to it. I couldn't go back to half shutter button and wait.

The first few pictures each weekend made me wonder why the camera wasn't focusing. Then I remembered back button focusing was set. It felt so natural when I used it that I regretted not doing it sooner. After about a year I couldn't imagine not having it.

Press the button, release it and recompose on static subjects. Press the shutter button when ready. Hold the button in to continuously track moving subjects, releasing the shutter when ready. Those are the only two procedures you need. No real need to move the AF point around, especially with the 7dII zones.

Those are very handy functions however I have been whining about something for a year hoping Canon would listen. I wish they had added Drive Mode as an option in the detail set. This way I could leave it on one shot and when I use the shutter button which I still prefer for static shots I only get one shot. When I press a BBF then it would revert to high speed continuous. I keep it on HSC for emergencies and I get 2 to 3 shots when I shoot stills which is a minor inconvenience.

I noticed that the 1DX II did not get Drive Mode either so I stopped holding my breath for a FW update.

Not all of the ladies attending the Kentucky Derby are wearing big hats. Some are wearing big smiles, carrying cameras with white lenses and actually working.
