Not for me though. 0.5X maximum magnification? And I think the focusing light will crreate weird catch lights in certain subject's eyes.

The working distance will be tight - if the focal length is 28mm at 1x, then the lens-subject distance will be 56mm (front nodal point to the subject).

Pentax Spotmatic F with 28/3.5, 50/1.4, 50/1.8, 135/3.5; Canon digital gear

it's not 1:2...it's 1.2...look at the specs on B&H or at canons website...

the digitalrev article is probably a typo...as it says "The lens’ focusing range of 1:1 can be increased to 1:2 using a Super Macro Mode." it would be odd for super macro mode to decrease the magnification...

You are right! Silly mistake by digitalrev!

Seems like the front element can extend forward / retract to achieve higher than life size magnification.

Still not the first though. Venus 60mm can do 2:1 without any add-on!

I can't get past the manual aperture on both the Venus lenses Kurt. IMHO the EF-S 60mm + 37mm of extension is a better option for getting to 2x even though it's more expensive.

I think that's one of the reasons Canon added a built in LED light to the lens.
