I think a closer crop would help both images, also you could warm the shots up some and see if helps. I like the one of him helping her across the water they look like they are having fun.

Your niece has a very fair complexion and its a challenge on a bright day as her skin color literally turns almost white.

A little sharpening, and adding warm tones to the skin (orange tone) will make it more natural like overcast.
