Good spot! A bit of a MISPRIUNT on my part!
Actually (except on the 100-400 Mk2) I don't like IS even at somewhat lower speeds than that but If I keep saying that people will think that I am even more weird!;-)a

No matter how I calibrate the 100-400II with the Canon 1.4x TC on the 7DII, I am still unhappy about the sharpness. And I am not talking about BIF, just a single heron standing in a swamp. I will try to post pics later. The camera with this lens alone is a great combination, as many already noted here.

I just spent the entire day doing just that with 2 1.4III's that I own. Mostly because on this camera and 100-400LII I have never been that happy where on my first 7DII I had a hard time telling the difference between on or off. I did find a place where it was not bad but I can still see its just not up to it if Im looking for super sharp. This morn the 1.4III was close to for sale. BUT I guess it has its place. Then I remember ....I have all the Canon gear I can afford and just shrug my shoulder's and put'er back in the bag. Shot this with the same 1.4III on my first 7DII

Mine is out a mile. +14 @ 560 with the 1.4 III. Archibald has the same numbers.+3 sans TC on my system. Zoom lenses are TC compatible and Canon actually mentions the 100-400 II as compatible. Lens Rentals says TC's are tuned for long primes. As we know there is variation in everything that is manufactured. Perhaps a tad of extra variation in some other area of this lens throws it off more than normal some way.

It is not the TC because I get +3 with the 300L F4 IS.

What are you using to check MFA? I got Focal because it got to the point I started to question my results too much.

I use DotTune as I cannot trust my eyes. It works well for all my lenses. I should probably give the Focal a try.

I have read you can use Dot Tune with Magic Lantern so it is automated but I'm not sure to what degree. I'm pretty happy with Focal. I did not regret spending the money. You will need the Pro Version if you decide to get. The basic only goes to 400mm.

Thanks but...............with the magpie lark, IS on, and those shutter speeds, they're OK. I've just this minute taken 18 shots of this mynah in my yard where the shutter speeds were 1600 and 2000 and everyone but these 2 needed binning. I'm beginning to think Jeff and others have something and that IS can actually be a hindrance at high shutter speeds. I've turned mine off now for my next shoots in similar light............I just have to wait for a bird to land in the yard to substantiate my suspicion.

I think that you may be seeing what I was getting at about turning IS off. I know it is counter intuitive but it is well worth trying. Turning IS off doesn't work for everyone but it certainly works for me!
I have taken a bit of flak for this view but it has given me a higher "Hit" rate on moving subjects and seems to have few, if any, penalties on static subjects. These days I don't bother turning IS on even at quite low shutter speeds with any of my lenses almost regardless of shutter speeds.
As I posted earlier I do have trouble hand holding the 100-400 Mk2 at low shutter speeds so I tend to use IS mode 3 below 1/400 sec or so. A little while back I posted 4 consecutive images taken with my 7D2 + 1.4 Mk3 and 100-400 Mk2 at full extension. So that's a field of view equivalent to just under 900mm. I just wanted to see how unsteady I was with this combination! I should say that I was able to lean my left elbow against the side of the hide (which helped a little) but other than that they were unsupported. I have attached the images here - they were all taken with the above combination at 1/50 sec. Remember this is the lens that I struggle to hand hold!
Sorry about the quality but the light was horrible!
