Looking for any comments or criticisms on these photos -- there's only one more tournament for my daughter this season, so I'm looking for a different style of photo than the typical "Player A attacking / setting / blocking". Anyone have any tips or suggestions for "different" volleyball pics? Limiting factors will be that there's no opportunity to go above the court -- I'm stuck at court level, but I've got a bit of flexibility to move around the court.

If you can't go high, go low. Sit down on court level and get the camera as low as possible.

You should get this picture of the serve. It is easy to focus, you have some choice of background (high v low and crowd v flag or scoreboard on wall). Plus, the arms and ball frame the face beautifully.

You can even shoot up toward the players:

Try some shots toward the net:

Try shooting underneath the net to the other side:

Don't forget the "Jube" shots.

Shoot wide:

Through the net:

Don't forget the coach:

From the stands:

Be ready when they win!

And finally, how do you salvage a shoot when most of your results from shooting in "Available darkness" look crappy? My solution was to make a poster where small images will look good. :D
Go Ye forth & come back with better results!

No suggestions but I think you did a fine job capturing the action and emotion.

Thanks everyone... it's my goal to shoot volleyball like Ziv and PhotosGuy, so thankfully my daughter has a few more years left for me to practice!

And PhotosGuy -- that poster is a great idea! Now I'm going to have to go back through my files to see if there are any that looked good at a smaller size that I had originally written off.

What position does she play? There are a few things each position does that are a little different. For example, setters many times will call plays or approaches with hand signals behind her back or next to her leg as the other team prepares to serve. Outside hitters tend to swing wide of the post, then approach at a strong angle - can you capture that angle so you she what she does? Blockers (especially middles) tend to have a step pattern to get to the outside to close a block. Their explosive last step could be a great capture.

I'm a coach who is learning the photo side. At least that's my excuse! I have coached everything from 6th graders to NCAA... each player develops habits and cues as to what she will do and how she will attack a play. Capturing that is what I am learning now. My favorite was a middle blocker who stuck her tongue out whenever it was a quick hit - hers or the opponents. She didn't believe me until I captured it in a photo. She still does it - but tends to smile a little afterwards!

Your images are good, and with a few more years, I look forward to seeing what you can capture moving forward.

And the guys in this thread are great ones to aspire to shoot like - especially Ziv - I have enjoyed his work on POTN for quite a while!

Thanks for sharing!

She's a middle so, at the venues she's playing in right now, I have to battle the net to get any images of her -- I can't elevate, because there are no stands, and side/profile shots are hit-or-miss because her face will usually be obstructed by her arms.

Her bad habit is closing her eyes on the block -- on instinct, she thinks she'll get hit by the ball in the face. Which leads to shots like this -- probably a nice capture if she had her eyes open (and I spend some time in post)...

Very common habit for a middle... I've seen that even at the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Not often though ߙ
She's got good extension, just a slight change with her hands and she could probably close down a lot more attacks.
Sorry - coach mode! Not sure if she would want advice...

Good image, and it is tough to capture with the net. You caught her extended and getting a hand on the ball.
Nice capture!
