I'd love to start taking shots like that, I'll post up a few of my favourites after work today. I'm thinking of getting a 10-22mm lens, good or bad for nightclubs?

I'm using just the kit lens right now because its the widest I have, it does a good job but nothing EPIC like your shots on the first page. (I haven't much time to surf through this whole thread yet unfortunately).

Also is it worth buying a off camera flash cord? I've got a 430EX II and love it, yet when I take photos of people sitting infront of a wall the shots taken just turn out plain and boring, which isn't a good look for the subjects, me, the photography company I work for, or the club.

I would *not* recommend a 10-22mm. I have one myself and have only used it once in a night club, and really wasn't too pleased with the results.. it's simply *too* wide-angle, unless you always want to shoot at 22mm. Mind you this is for portrait shots only. If you want to get fun "whole club" shots, this lens is great, but really for a "capture-all" (i.e. mostly portrait) lens you'd want either a 17-55 or 17-40, etc.

Plus the fact that it's 3.5-4.5, doesn't let you get the non-flash/ambient artsy shots you are probably hoping for. Don't get me wrong, the 10-22 is a FUN lens (hands down AWESOME for landscapes), just not for a night club, IMO.

If anyone thinks otherwise says they've used the 10-22, please feel free to show me some fine examples. ;)

Now those I like! presuming that was a bracket mounted direct flash?

Welcome to the gang dude :)

right here's a few recent shots from moi and a few more ambient styleeee as well... (sorry if I've put these up previously) - EXIF should be all intact for your EXIF viewing pleasure (and help C&C... which would be welcome)

I love how these pictures came out. I will look at your EXIF data, but did you add a Motion Blur or any sort of filter to the backgrounds to get that effect? I'm doing a gig tonight and want to achieve similar. Thanks! :D

That's just slow-synch flash, so that the background isn't dark. The flash provides a short-duration main light, but the shutter is kept open long enough to record the lower level of ambient lighting in the background. This also records the movement as a blur.

Still trying to stake my place in the Salt Lake City nightlife scene. We've got an AMAZING nightlife crowd here. It's hard to get your name out though. The scene is saturated with photographers all wanting to be 'the one' that the promotors choose to take their shots. Here's a few I've snapped.

Just so you're aware, there's a HUGE thread already for this. No need to bump an old thread.

And the thread was closed after 11k posts? So it continues here.
Im hoping to be getting into some of this after spring break. Has anyone had any success in bar/dancefloor venues? We just had a bar open up here that is very popular and has a huge dancefloor lounging area. Worth a shot to make some money/connections?

Posted in another thread, then directed here :)

Hey guys, I have been shooting nightclubs (well nightclub, since there are only two in Reno...) for about a month now and would like some opinions on how to make my pictures more interesting and better overall.

I am using the equipment in my signature (only added what I am using for nightclub stuff), and I feel like I should be able to produce better images. I saw another thread on this forum that had someone shooting with an XTi (according to EXIF data) and his/her pictures look very sharp and clean.

I am shooting at f/4, 1/10 and 800 ISO using the flash on the hotshoe with it pointed at about 45 degrees depending on the shot.

I feel like my shots are kind of boring and hazy or just not as sharp as some others on here. Here is a link to some images on my Flickr page to see what I mean:

and here are some from my website:

Thanks in advance.

That shot up top with the mixing board is nice.
