The thing about updates is that the code QA engineer may see something that's not right and fix it without bothering to document the fix. Or, even if documented in the engineering reports not published as part of the change log, because its too minor. I've seen that a lot.

One reason I always update my cameras and the gear to latest firmware whether the documented updates are important to me or not.

Agree. Clandestine patches aren't that unusual.

Glad to hear the ERR problem is fixed regardless of how. :-)

Well done.
If I had shot this I probably would have had the fill just a bit lower. It looks too lit to me.
I agree that maybe the background could be a bit deeper.

As you've shown, this is one of the more challenging lighting situations.

Here is a similar situation.

QUOTED IMAGE

Single CL-600 camera right. Sun wasn't as bright. The only obvious indication that I had fill light is the shadow of the baby's foot on mom's tummy on the left side.

The light had the standard reflector on it and was probably 20 feet from the group.

Good work David. I assume this was with bare flash? I guess I can go that rout instead of using umbrella. That would save me a lot more wattage.

Right.
Just the standard reflector.
HERE (external link) is a series I did with the CL-600 and a 28" Fotodiox beauty dish. Unfortunately, I got a shadow behind them walking across the street in the Abby Road redux shot.

I don't think I was more than half or 1/4 power on any of them, including the shot with the car.

No, they are not unusual at all. As someone who used to test hardware for a couple of camera companies, I frequently saw that not everything gets documented. That's both good and bad, depending upon your buggy issue. :-)

Side note: I canceled my D5 pre-order. I want to give Nikon a bit more time to get some things straight with the imaging sensor and their new AF system. Meanwhile, I still have the D4S as my primary workhorse. But let me know how you're finding shadow area noise at low ISO when you get a chance.

I haven't done extensive testing, but I'm already aware that the dynamic range of the D5 won't match my D800 at low ISO's. This can, of course, translate to somewhat limited shadow recovery. If I needed incredible DR and shadow recovery, I would get a Pentax 645Z. The image on the left was captured as a JPEG with my D5 at ISO 200. The image on the right shows what it looks like when pulled up by 3.35 stops in LR.

I'm not having any luck using the Cells IIc to get HSS with my StreakLight 360 units and my Canon 5D III & 7D II. I've tried setting the flash to full power, putting the Cells IIc in the hot shoe of the camera and then using higher than normal sync shutter speeds and the flash is not exposing the image. I, also, tried to set the 360 in the HSS mode and it's not working that way either. I'm able to set the shutter speed on my cameras as high as I want with the Cells IIc mounted in the hot shoe and the flash unit is triggering but the timing is such that the images look the same as if I wasn't using the flash. I had a person in a Facebook group tell me he had to use a Cells IIn as both the trigger and on his bare bulb unit (I don't know if he was using Streaklight, Godox or another branded version) in order to get HSS to work. This is contrary to what I've read. Any suggestions?

Hi.

I haven't used the CellsII for this, but I have used another HSS-capable trigger set (YongNuo) and it worked:

This assumes you have:

-A set of two CellsII (transmitter and receiver)
-A Godox FT-16 trigger set

Put the CellsII transmitter in the camera hot-shoe.

Put the FT-16 transmitter in the shoe of the CellsII receiver, and leave them somewhere nearby.

And of course make sure the FT-16 units are set to same channel and group.

Enable HSS mode on camera and on AD360.

=====

Hope this helps.

Owen.

I just received a CellsII for my Canon set up on Friday and tested it out with my Godox AD360 in HSS mode and it worked great. I didn't have to use the F16 transmitter at all. I tried to use my YN622's and I could not get that set up to work so I bought the CellsII.

Just curious: did you consider using an X1T and XTR16 instead of the CellsII? (I know the combo is about $40 more)

The Cells II is supposed to work with the 360 unit without having a second one connected to the flash. I have a FT 16 connected to the 360.

Yes, I'm considering that but just trying to figure out why this isn't working like it's supposed to.

Hi Mike,

Ok, I got curious so dug out a CellsII and tested it with a AD360 and FT-16 and a 5DIII.

Dunno if this is good news for you or bad, but it worked in HSS.

The CellsII was set to

-Flash
-TX
-channel 5 (dip switch 3 up only)

The FT-16 was set to Channel 5, and group whatever (this did not affect the firing)

The AD360 was set to HSS using the awkward two-button (MODE-SET) press.

On the 5D Mark III, in the menu "External Speedlight Control" , submenu "Flash Function Settings", "Shutter synchronization" was set to "High-speed synchronization"

If all this equipment and these setting mirror yours, I'm stumped.

Owen.
