Thanks.. ;-)a lol, no problem. I was using my sigma 2.8 17-50 at 40mm f3.2. My D5100's screen flips all the way around, so I was just holding it up at arm's length (my arms aren't very long btw) while standing by a window. I realize now that wasn't among my brightest ideas..

What wasn't a bright idea? I love window light!Just put the 5100 on a tripod and flip the screen around. You'll nail it next time!:-)

I could never hand hold a SLR to take a selfie, you did a good job. Yes if you had nailed focus on the left eye it would have been a nice:-) natural light shot.

I probably couldn't either, so I use a tripod! ;)

My reasoning for hand holding the camera is so I can take multiple shots in a row, then try a different angle. Otherwise it's way more tedious to set it up on the tripod on timer, then take one by one. But I'll try it that way with my umbrella and see what I come up with.

Tripod is definitely more elaborate for self-portraits. It allows you, however, to do the lightstand trick mentioned above, as well as have a good lighting arrangement. Personally, I dislike being photographed, but eventually you do need those profile portraits for your website or CV.

Mind, if you're going for a real close up, you could use the cable release.

I bought the Diva ringlight from Amazon and I really like the effect (some may not!) but I wasn't crazy with how close I had to have the light in order to get the catch lights. I am thinking of building a bigger version so that I don't have to be so close and I can use a longer focal length.

Here's a self portrait to try my new Canon 50mm f1.2 L and my new 120 cm Octobox.
