Thank you very much Levina and Joayne. This is such a nice place for children of
all ages. The folks that run this are all volunteers and they build their own trains
and create a really cool area for the trains to run. It only costs $3 per ride and
people can come here and have birthday parties and celebrations as well. The
rides are great, over and under bridges and through tunnels.
I will go out again when the weather is better and go for a ride with nifty
to show how great it is.

Ajfb004- I think he was looking sad because it was starting to rain. His
steam train is wonderful.

Cool. Looking forward to that!

Or maybe he was just really focused on the little locomotive, making sure it was running at peak efficiency! I'm sure he thinks of it as his baby. Men dedicated to something so wonderful often do. Just a thought of course... :-)

Great to see that the euro Nifty is finally being used again :)
Also nice to see some pictures of my "home" Amsterdam.
Levina, not really a request, but maybe a suggestion if you like it yourself: there is a big rowing event (Koninklijke Holland Beker) at the Bosbaan on June 4-5. Could be interesting :)

Also interesting to see the pictures from Hawaiiboy, I've been in Vancouver the past week but probably would never end up at the places he took shots thus far :)

It sure is great to finally have Nifty in Amsterdam again, Pieter.
We need people on the Euro list though as both LollieLaurie and Rob612 haven't posted anything for over a year so I think we can write them off. And that only leaves me...

A rowing event at the Bosbaan? That could be fun! And it gives me a reason to go to the Amsterdamse Bos. I didn't go there during my first tour of Nifty, so this would be a nice opportunity. I've put it on the list. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi everybody. I processed a batch of shots, taken yesterday at the Eastern Docklands. They're shots of 9 foot bridges and I'm going to post them all because these are very special bridges and very pretty. You see they speak a language in a unique made-up alphabet, known as Azart. So these bridges meander and form letters and the letters form words, like Light or Society. That is why these bridges are known as "word bridges" or "letter bridges". The name of the alphabet, Azart, is a word play on AZ-art. It also refers to the French "hazard" meaning a.o. fortuity or chance.

The Azart alphabet was developed by two Belgian artists, Guy Rombouts and his wife Monica Droste. Rombouts still uses his alphabet (Droste passed away). I could find no Wiki on this in English, but Guy Rombouts created an interactive website where you can type in words and they will be translated into Azart: http://www.azart.be/azartstart.html (external link)
It is said there are 10 people in the world who can actually read Azart without a dictionary. :)

I did find a reference in English after googling but that site have their facts wrong. They say these bridges are named after the so called "ship of fools" Azart and so these bridges are known as "fools bridges". They are not and the reference is wrong.

However, the fact that we have 9 foot bridges that are written in an alphabet called Azart is quite apt. Because on the island there is an Azartplein / Azart Square. It was named after the ship of fools Azart. This was a floating stage that often used to dock right at the location of where the square was later built and as people already called the place Azart Square, it was made official.

Enough talking. Here's the first batch of bridges.
First a shot to give you an idea of how these bridges are situated in the area.
EDIT: I just realised I posted this first shot last time, as a teaser . I'll just keep it in, let's say as a reminder? :p

And by the way, you will see these everywhere. They are traffic mirrors. The streets here are narrow and this allows people to look around the corner before turning it. There is no way to avoid them in my pictures.

The people in the pics may not be in good focus. That's because I wasn't focusing on them. They just happened to be walking or cycling there. :)

The last bridge from two different sides.
I'm always fascinated to see how different the light is when changing the angle. Colours too are greatly effected.
