After his first early morning appearance in which he scampered away as soon as I got the camera to my eye, I was blessed with an encore by this juvenile heron. FINALLY, I get to have an interesting bird land directly in front of me! SUCH a good time shooting, this is an opportunity I have been waiting a long time for!

He sat there for so long that I was able to experiment with settings; IS on/off, with and without the 1.4xIII extender, faster and slower shutter speeds to slow rain. By far, best IQ is from the bare 100-400 on the 80D, w/ IS. I couldn't hand hold that rig very well at such low shutter speeds :p

Yes, I've noticed postings have slowed down considerably in recent days in several of the threads/forums I follow. Here are a couple from a walk along the local bikepath this morning, could have posted in Birds or 7D2, but since they were shot with this lens, here goes. A pair of adult wood ducks, and a hen wood duck with her brood. Enjoy! John

Are you guys finding hand holding, even with IS, you are getting the best results when matching the shutter speed to the focal length?

I must not be a very good hand held shooter.

George I have found it very easy to handhold this lens and now most of the time I.S is off, but there are still times I go back to mode 2 and 3, Old habits die hard lol. although these are I.S off

Hi George - the Image Stabilization of this lens is a definite improvement over the earlier version. For static subjects, I prefer shutter speeds of at least 1/250, and preferably closer to 1/1000, but if conditions dictate a slow speed, I've been very happy with some shots at 1/30, 1/60, and 1/125 hand held. I try to brace myself into as stable a position as I can and trip the shutter just like I'm trying to make a precise shot with a firearm ("cause the gun to fire without disturbing the sight alignment"). Above 1/500, I'm increasingly turning IS off in the belief that it isn't cycling fast enough to help and might even hinder sharpness, though can't say I've seen any detrimental effects of leaving it on - still experimenting. Here are a few handheld shots at 1/30, 1/60, and 1/125. John

I got great shots with the 400 + 1.4x TC.

With the 100-400ii, I have to go to 1/1000s for BIFs to be sharp.
But I took handheld 1/60s shots of the Xmas tree, and they were great...
