Con season is starting to get going! Looking forward to seeing a bunch of results from Megacon, Momocon, Animazement, and Space City Comic Con this weekend.

Here's my favorite shot from Megacon: My wife's debut of her new Lady Loki, from the Marvel universe. She found a vintage green sequin dress with a plunging neckline, and we just had to do something fantastic with it.

The diadem/horns were made by me, out of Sintra, Apoxie Sculpt, and two cheap plastic lightsabers. Can't decide whether to embellish or bedazzle it any more.
The cape was made by her.
The scalemail collar/necklace is made by me from scales and rings by RingLord (my first time making anything out of scale).

Location is the convention area at the Hyatt Regency Orlando. Lighting is a single Speedlight in a 42" brolly box.

Nathan, these of your wife are really nice. She looks great, the dress looks great, the lighting is awesome. How did you light these?

Thanks! This was the debut of this outfit, so it still needs a bit more work, but we're both happy with it for now.

Lighting was the simplest setup for all of them in this set: A single YN560II Speedlight in a 42" brolly box (reflective umbrella with front diffuser) on a tall stand - I think I had it high enough that the bottom edge of the modifier was right around face height. This is my go-to setup when I need to travel light and set up quick, I've done it enough that I know what settings to put in and what results I'll get. There was also a moderate amount of mixed ambient from various windows, skylights, and all sorts of interior lights.

I'm fortunate that she's experienced enough as a model to give lots of good poses and find the light - as I've developed as a photographer, she has simultaneously grown her skill as a model, funny how that works :D

There are a few more in my Flickr, this area of the hotel offered a nice variety of backgrounds.

I think it was Marilyn Monroe that was know to be able to find the perfect position relative to the lighting by feeling the heat of the light(s).

Thanks for the info on your lighting set up. It's nice when you have enough ambient that you only need to supplement it with your flash.

Ha ha, I hadn't heard that one. I wonder how true it is.

It reminds me of the tall tale of the photographer who can determine his camera settings by observing his assistant's pupils dilation. Maybe, maybe not.

Two more from Megacon, our friend Candy as Batgirl.

Lighting is again using my go-to Speedlights setup: One YN560II in a reflective brolly box umbrella, and a second YN560II with no modifier but a blue color gel. At the convention center, we found an empty lobby area that connected to some unused meeting rooms, so we had room to set up lights and play around without disturbing other people. Unlike the Lady Loki photos above, I minimized the ambient with a fast shutter speed, keeping just enough to give good definition of the black cowl.

As per my usual, all processing done in Lightroom; the "Bleach Bypass" preset worked surprisingly well for a comic-book tone.

This one would probably work really well for a drop-in background, but I'm not really good at that sort of compositing. It took a good ten or twelve tries to get this right - the cape, hair, pose, and face all lined up. We have a few funny outtakes, of course.

Couple more from MegaCon. Spider-Gwen and Black Cat, shot on the skybridge between the Hyatt and the convention center. This is about midnight; during the day the skybridge is packed with foot traffic.

Lighting is a single Elinchrom D-lite it 2 in a MaxiLite bowl reflector, and a sloowwwww shutter speed to bring in just a little ambient.
