After updating the firmware I have now had several times out with the lens over a month or so. I am sure that on Focus Speed priority I have more trouble getting focus and get more misses. The increased speed just isn't significant enough to worry about using this setting compared with the normal setting. Anyone else found similar?

I have not had that issue. In fact, I expected to have a few missed focus issues, but I have been pleasantly surprised at how accurate the focus is. Not to say that I don't miss focus on some shots, but I tend to shoot small, quick birds in trees and bushes and I don't care what lens you use, when photographing birds, you will miss focus on some shots.

Tim

No problems with mine after firmware update. Can't really tell the difference between it and my Canon 400 f5.6.

Probably took me about 3 wks to reach a verdict about the FW update and performance.

Verdict? I could not sense an improvement but certainly not degraded performance.

Sigma stated a 20-50% increase of AF speed and I think they used the term "for standard stills" or some such terminology. Oh I do have faith there is at least a 20% increase - I am just saying that 20% is small enough that I cannot discern how it is better. I was pleased before the FW update. Many people have claimed on here they have noticed a difference. Good on them. ;-)a

My last day of vacation and I decided to head out to a wildlife safari nearby. Managed to capture a couple shots of a bear and some other wildlife.

Time to show some more Radio Control stuff done last weekend. It was supposed to rain most of the day but instead we had sun for part of the afternoon followed by a thunderstorm which went around us but just sprinkled as we started preparing for the big dinner the club put on. This was what's called a 'Huckin" event which is all about crazy aerobatics, and lots of pilots hover (hanging from the prop) trying to lightly stand the plane on it's tail. Hover photos can be considered stills, so I'm including a mix of hovers & full power passes. The lens performed VERY well, and I'm happy with the AF speed & accuracy but still may see if I can fine tune it for even better speed later in the season. Unfortunately I found the zoom grip area to be hard on the hand after about 5 consecutive hours of use. The ribs feel a bit sharp to the skin after long usage & I'll be padding that section with some neoprene or whatever I can make up that's tidy looking.

I really like your shots, seems like a nice challenge to capture these fast little places, so well done.
May I ask why you use f13 and f20 as aperture setting, I might suggest to keep it at f8 and use the extra exposure room for faster shutter speeds, to me all apertures higher than f8 have no benefit.
Just a thought, and keep shooting.

We have a club nearby where I go to spot and shoot birds, the birds do not seem to be scared by the little planes at all, even if they make a lot of noise.

Regards, Antwan

I knew that question would come up. Basically I set my ISO to try & stay in the f8-f11 range but often forget to re set as the sun comes out due to the constant action. That morning was heavily overcast & although it got bright mid day it went back to overcast after an hour or 2. The other reasons I basically pick one setting are that the majority of my photos are full of sky but without warning I may have a low level pass (pilots must call out "low pass" or high speed low pass so everyone else knows the runway area is busy). The background is usually very dark at most fields & the camera often ends up at f5 to f6.3 to get those shots. Higher shutter speeds are a no-no because it freezes the props in most cases, especially on the big gas powered planes which run relatively slow compared to the smaller gas or nitro powered engines. The bigger the prop being turned the slower the engines run is a good general rule. Sometimes even 1/320 will freeze the prop well enough to think it's flying dead stick.
Club days can have 1 or 2 planes in the air but at most local events we try to have 4 flying & sometimes even 5 throughout the day, and the circuit can be considered to be about the size of 4 football fields, 2 end to end by 2 wide. I need to capture the action along the flight line & in all of that air space, & may have 3 body & lens combinations on hand or hanging off of me. The clubs depend on me & my photo albums to help build events, solicit sponsorship & to show the sponsors how well an event went & how many attended etc.
