Advice on 1st Prime

Well, my A6000 arrive today DOA, so back to Amazon it goes. Kind of a bummer.

Man that sucks!

So now I'm thinking of ordering through BH or Adorama and I'm wondering if I should skip the kit lens me and go straight for a lens I'd prefer. I like the idea of the kit lens for when my wife uses the camera, but I also like the idea of putting the $150 towards something I'd enjoy more.

Personal choice really but I decided to skip the kit lens myself

I already have the Batis 25 and was planning on using that on the a6300 as well as the a7rii. That was going to give me 36mm on the crop. I then thought whats the point of buying the 24 1.8 in that case when its not much smaller than the batis. Thats what steered me towards the 35 2.8 and I chose the full frame option so that I could use it on the a7rii also (without being in crop mode) as I didnt have a 35mm anymore

I started with A6300 + kit lens + 10-18 and zeiss 24 1.8, I ended up returning the 24 because for a bit more I could get the Batis, and have a lens that is great on A6300 and A7RII.

The zeiss 24 1.8 is a great lens, but a bit to expensive for crop only.

I like the kit lens, and so does my fiance, it's not the best but size is great and image quality is decent.

I've seen the Zeiss 24 in the $700 range in the Adorama used section, fair value at that price it seems.

Well, just pulled the trigger on another A6000 and kit lens. I spent a few hours researching and realized that a zoom is important for me for my upcoming trip. I am still torn between the 35 1.8, 28f2, and 24z. I'm also considering the 18-200 for my wife to use when she assists me with a wedding next month. She usually uses a 5D and takes great composition shots but struggles with focus. Maybe the a6000 and a nice lens will help her, be quite a bit lighter as well, and just plain helps with my justification for purchase!

Well, I finally got my camera and it's pretty darn cool. Very different than the DSLR's that I'm used to. I was able to pretty much figure most of the advanced controls out by just playing around with it and have it setup to about 85% of my liking, I just need to get out and shoot more. The kit lens is what has been described, although since this camera is really replacing my G15, I was pleasantly surprised with the kit lens in comparison. I have to admit that in the 10 or so years that I've really been into photography, this next lens purchase was one of the more stressful for me. I wanted to make the right decision, and with so many options and no major standout winners I found it tough. I've since decided to sell my 5Dii and a 17-40l and speed light as I can really get by without them anyway. Over the last several days I have been so torn over which lens to get, should I get an A7ii as well, if so do I get an Fe lens for this A6000. Should I get a nice zoom so that my wife can use it at some of my paid events etc. Well, I'm still undecided on the A7ii and may go that route once I sell my 5Dii, but I need to convince myself that it's truly worth 3x the cost of the a6000 and if I even feel successful shooting mirrorless. With this possible switch, I'm trying to change up my overall shooting as well. I'm going to try doing somethings in jpeg which I've always shot raw, and I've always done everything simply manual with focusing and recomposing etc. I'm thinking I may try to start taking advantage of some of the cameras new features which I've mostly avoided in the past. Thanks to all for the great advice and help, you all definitely helped me make the decision to go with the Sony 28fe f/2. After hours on here and Flickr reviewing hundreds of images, I think the 28 should work just fine. The only real clear winners for my personal liking are the 55 1.8 and the two big 85's as I just love my 85Lii. Those two lenses are what are pushing me towards the A7ii, but I'm just hesitant with that large of an investment for my current situation, and I already have some really nice Canon glass. Anyway thanks again, and I'll try to get a couple photos up once I get this little setup all figured out! Jake

It looks like you are on the right track! Seems like the 28/2 is a can't lose lens.

Before you sell the 85Lii, you should check out the results Mystik610 has with his on the a7rii. Yes, you'll need a $400 Metabones IV adapter to get acceptable AF (unless one of the other brand's adapters is now comparable?) but man--if I had a markii A7 body I would probably pony up. For now, the 55 1.8 lives on my a7r and it is pretty amazing glass.

Thanks for the tip, and don't you worry, I won't be parting with my 85Lii anytime soon, it's not my most used lens, but it's just about my favorite! I am actually possibly picking up a second hand metabones adapter in a couple hours from someone locally. It sounds like it's far from perfect, but I plan to treat it like using a manual focus lens setup anyway. Gonna try my 24-70ii on it at lunch this afternoon....

I just picked up a metabones adapter for $150 and here is the 1 test shot I took with it inside the gentleman's home with my 24-70 @ 2.8. I just did a quick manual focus so I didn't nail it and this was transferred to my phone as I'm on the road, but I kind of like it!

Been enjoying this Metabones adapter with my 24-70Lii. I am happy with the image quality, but would consider the AF just about useless. It works, but it's extremely slow. I can use MF and with slight adjustments snap off about 3 shots before the AF were to lock onto one. I am ok with it though, and just shoot MF with it. I am not sure I would pay $400 for it, unless it were the only option out there. I also ordered the 55 1.8 for my trip, so the 28 and 55 will be my only two lenses for this camera (gonna offload the kit lens most likely). I am really looking forward to putting them through their paces......

The 30mm f1.8 is a decent lens and reasonably priced.
