The last of my blue tit series, the ungrateful b'stards have only got up and left! Just like that! No warning, nothing. I bet they won't even visit :(

Beautiful! Is that with natural light?

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Thanks! I used diffused flash, but the ambient light was strong and was a significant source.

Is the flash off-camera? I've been dabbling with macro a bit and I've been finding lighting to be a struggle. Macro is one thing I wouldn't mind taking a class on.

On camera.

You need to diffuse flash for macro to prevent a harsh look and hot spots. There are many ways to diffuse flash. You can find dozens of solutions on the Web.

I have tried several ways, and all work, with various pros and cons. Some are complicated, and some are simple. In the last while I have been using a very simple diffuser made out of ordinary writing paper or vellum paper. A full 8.5x11 or 8x10 inch sheet is cut into a rough semi-circle, a smaller half-circle is cut out of the middle of the flat part to accommodate the lens, some tabs are made, and it is mounted onto the end of my Canon 100 mm L with an elastic. The sheet assumes a fan shape on the lens. It is illuminated by a Canon 270EX II flash, which has a low profile. The other flashes have heads that sit too high, with most of the light missing the diffuser. Simple, and seems to work well.

Writing paper diffuses better, but vellum is brighter, and still diffuses well. So I usually use vellum now.

There's a pic of the setup on a POTN thread of a couple months ago.

Thanks! I definitely want to spend some time getting better at macro photography. I've got lots of ideas but I've found macro photography to be the most technically challenging for me.

This is the diffuser that I use: http://www.ebay.com.au …32cfdb:g:RVgAAOSwyjBW6mtH (external link)

There's lots of similar models on ebay most of them with a separate holding strap but with my propensity to lose stuff, I opted for this one as the strap is elastic and stitched onto the diffuser

I also use on of these on occasion http://www.ebay.com.au …6bbecc:g:1z4AAOSwu1VW6iF- (external link)

Yes, I have one of these Chinese softboxes too. How do you set it up for macro? In the flash shoe or on a bracket? Or hand-held on a cable maybe?

I mount it on a cheapo chinese "gorillapod" and shoot wireless if I'm in the rainforest (the subjects are mainly down low) but mounted on a tripod at home when doing macro, otherwise mounted on hot shoe.
