Caught this one leaving New York harbor a couple weeks ago. She's the USS Bataan(LHD-5) amphibious assault ship.

Yes training also running up the engine and making sure the winches, wires etc are all working. On the majority of civilian ships I worked on we had lifeboat drill once a week.

I took the shot from Point Iroquois Light near Brimley, MI. The Blough was grounded on Gross Cap reef which is at the lower end of Whitefish Bay on Lake Superior.

Where HMS Ocean (above) was berthed, we now have the damaged submarine HMS Ambush and I didn't have the proper lens to get a good pic

There's always loads of ships/boats around here Annie, could become an anorak spotter!

Oh yes, I heard about that. The Astute class seems to be a bit accident prone. HMS Astute ran aground up here when on commissioning trials. I think the names may have something to do with it! Imagine calling a sub "Ambush"

Excellent shots Ian, well done. I hope you do become an 'anorak' Ian as I like your work. I heard about Ambushes collision is she badly damaged?

Conning tower damaged, now covered with scaffolding and tarpaulin. There's quite a few pics out there (BBC, etc), but the best one I've seen is at www.chronicle.gi (external link) tug boat pulling her into harbour.

Thanks for the compliment re my work!

Och, the tide just went out a wee bit quicker than Astute realised :p
