considering he hit a deer with a rental car, almost ran into a humpback...and then went out shooting grizzlies, i think it's safe to say that he hit a grizzly with it...

Me, too. But the facts of the case are totally and completely irrelevant. Some will see the damage as proof that filters protect lenses. Some will see it as evidence that the hit would not have damaged the much stronger front element. Add this one to the list of never-ending debate:h

filters or not
ff vs crop
death penalty
Cubs vs Sox
Ginger or Mary Ann
abortion

In the end, there are no 'true' answer. Well, except that Mary Ann was just plain HOT!

Except for the fact Ginger was HOT!!!!!!!

Don't know what did that to your lens but you certainly don't need to go to BC. I've done that at the local MaDonald's shooting a kids birthday party.
Why do little kids think they need to stick their sticky fingers inside the hood of a lens?;-)a

Are they mutually exclusive?
Can't I like 'em both equallly?

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

i'm not sure how it happened but I believe when my gear was getting splashed by waves on the ride in I may have hit the filter with another lens or camera when I put it in my bag. I use protective filters as a default and remove them when i'm using creative filters such as NDs, CPLs or grad NDs....or when i'm doing night photography -- which really is often.

I view the protective filter as a seatbelt. I use it by default, not when I think I might need it. but I also shoot in tough environments and I don't baby my equipment.

now the AFJ think all filters are evil and will look for any opportunity to pontificate but I've made my case for using protective filters.

Count me among the "anti-Gulligan's Island" crowd. I'm more of an Avenger's kind of guy (Emma Peel), I guess.
