after much lurking, reading, and tearing out my hair to decide which 35mm to go with, i ordered this little beauty.
chose it over the Sigma35 and tamron35 based on size/weight and price!!! picked it up for $407 during the current father's day refurb sale!

cant wait til it gets here, it will be replacing my 40mm pancake and my 24-70 f/2.8 that i recently sold as it was just too damn heavy to carry around!

I also replaced the pancake with this lens - you won't be disappointed!

glad to hear. i was really on the fence coming from a 40 - its not quite a 50, not quite a 35. what got me is the max 2.8 aperture limitation. it was like carrying a 24-70 that was stuck at 40mm (and shed a few hundred grams :p )

I hear ya. The 40mm is a great lens, and super compact and light! I think the only reason I ended up trading it towards the 35mm was because the STM motor on mine was a step behind the action sometimes at the events I was shooting.

I was in the same boat. I had the old 35 and was planning on getting the 35L mark 1. Luckily I was persuaded here and a couple of other places to go with this lens. Super happy with it, you will love it!

Officially joining this thread today. Got my copy in the mail just now. I tested both the 35L version 1 and this lens and liked this lens better.

I have a question for everyone with this lens. Is the ultrasonic motor of this lens a little more on the noisy side compared with other lens? The copy I got kind of groans a little compared with my 70-200 f2.8. The af is a bit slower as well. Is this normal?

Every USM lens I've ever used makes a noise when it focuses. My 35 F2 IS makes a little noise, not sure what to describe it as, but it's nothing that has changed or been out of the ordinary from any other USM lens I have. Mine's AF is blazing, keeps up with my 85 & 200 primes just fine. 70-200 is also blazing fast. I wouldn't expect many lenses to keep up with a 70-200 or any other premier lens that Canon puts their most effort into.

Try turning off IS to see if that is making noise (it does a bit).

Very best,

Sorry for cluttering this thread but this description is exactly what I'm experiencing.

http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=17712.0 (external link)

This video I found is pretty much like mine. The focus is on the loud side and the af seems just a tiny bit on the slower side compared with other lens.

I'm guessing this is just how it is?

just received my lens from the refurb store. looks like new!

i have only been able to take a few random shots of stuff around the apartment, but seriously impressed with the IS, and how this baby renders. i think i will miss having 1.4 or 1.8 over f/2, but ill get over it :)
