Nick,

I know it has already been suggested, but I also vote for a Canon 5DSR (or a 5DS). I shot extensively with a 5D Mark III and then recently moved to a 5DSR and a 1DX Mark II. I have to say, the 5DSR is a really, really nice camera. I am very impressed with it. Take nearly everything the 5D Mark III has and improve on it, and more, and you have a 5DSR. The detail is truly fantastic.

The only things to be aware of regarding the 5DSR is that you will need more storage space for your files, an up-to-date computer to process the files, and high ISO performance will be slightly less (before you take into account any post-processing tricks). However, in exchange for these considerations, you get a ton of increased benefits over the 5D Mark III. Way too many to list here.

If money is a deep concern, then yes you can pick up a 5D Mark III and have $1K leftover for another lens. However, the 5DSR is an amazing camera that will give you so much more than a 5D Mark III alone.

Just my two cents. Of course, there are other options out there.

Cheers,
Bryan

Oh but there is, Dan.........you just have to read between the lines. It says: "I WANT A NEW CAMERA BODY."

Changing lenses for ones that better suit your needs, I can understand. But as for the body there is nothing you have mentioned yet that would need a new body, especially a 5DIII. It has higher fps and a better AF system. Great for shooting sport or street or other action - which you don't do.

I actually do shoot street candids a lot and weddings every so often as well so

I do need the FPS and its not just GAS but thanks, Saea

I also shoot skateboarding and quite a few other actions sports as well but its not my primary concern

but nonetheless, Its me upgrading because I want to and also because I need to.

I will definitely keep it in mind

with the announcement of the 5d mk iV I kinda want to see the price and all that

I'll shoot this probably for the rest of the year and see what pops up
that way it gives me time to save a bit

I really want a 1DX.

With my insurance its honestly once I buy something I get free replacements forever due to accidents/dmg lol
so, Its worth it for me to buy something more expensive and get free ones when they finally give out or get destroyed

I'm torn between which body should be next for me.

I love the 6D but I can't stomach paying for a new one again. I don't care about the wifi or gps in it.

I love the full frame aspect and plan on sticking with it.
I was looking at the 5d mk III and I know that would last me years to come.
I really love cameras that have good Dynamic range.
I don't really wanna swap to Nikon.
I was looking into sony a7 series which seem to be amazing.
I've really wanted to shoot medium format but i don't think its in my budget.

I shoot portraits exclusively. I do a fair share of photo walks and wandering but not much action at all.
I shoot weddings everyone once in a while but dont mind renting gear
I only have a tamron24-70 which Im selling and a canon 135mm for portraits which I'm kinda be elling soon as well I believe

I really wanna stay with Canon but I'm wondering when would be a smart time to buy.

They technology has been very lacking on canon's side

I dont mind buying used because if anything ever breaks or gets damaged my insurance replaces them 100% of the brand new cost.

If you were to have around $2500-3000 to buy a new body or body+lens what would you get?
I suppose I have a little more if I sold my used 6D and my tamron 24-70
could maybe toss on another $1400 to the price.

Problem solved: Get your insurance company to buy you one.

Buy some new lens for it and go for some roadtrip or so.

if it's like 13K photos then it's like a brand new. They can survive some beating so don't worry about it too much. Cheers!

I looked at these but a little pricey for my liking

I got my 5DS R from Canon's refurbished store for just under your allotted $3k budget. They have promotional codes often on the refurb stuff that knocks 10-15% off (except for this past 4th of July sale, where they raised all the prices 10% then provided a 10% off coupon, the cheeky sods). Like everything else I've got from there, it was indistinguishable from new (and probably was new overstock or damaged-box goods).

For portraits, the 5DS/R really can't be beat by any other currently-available 36x24 DSLR. With glass up to the task, you can literally shoot a full-body or 3/4 shot and pull a perfectly sharp 18MP+ headshot from it, it's nuts.

I feel the OP's pain.

I can't fault the image quality of my 6D but the focusing system limitations are a bit frustrating.
I bought a 7Dii to go with the 6D and the focus system is way better but the final image quality does not seem to be as good.

The above has also left me wanting a more capable camera.

any pro ready to upgrade and not waiting until the 5DiV comes out would be foolish IMO. Sounds like you've been pretty happy for 4 years, and from what I remember the IV is supposed to be announced in about 4 weeks? Get through the summer, save some more money and buy what will be a game changer in the industry.

I think the 6d is almost the perfect camera unless you specialize on shooting BIF or possibly some other moving subjects.
Therefore, I personally won't consider replacing it until there is some entirely new disruptive technology that justifies it, like possibly this:

A new Canon camera is always "just around the corner". The 1DX2 announcement happened many months after it "was supposed to". Then when there is an announcement, there is still a 2 month lag before you can get your hands on it. Until there is an official announcement, it is wiser to just base your decisions on what is actually available.

I visited your web page.
I like your pictures and am now not sure what you'll gain much from a new camera.

Your choice though.
