Got away from the lights of So Cal to camp at Jalama Beach last week. What a treat to see stars again!
Best,
Steve

Had the chance to do something special for my cousin's wedding over the weekend, a portrait under the stars at the end of the night. Quite the experience, probably the most meaningful Milky Way image I've ever done.

Nice! I've been planning to do this for a couple years, but just haven't had the luck yet to make it happen. Always end up in a location it's not visible, too cloudy, full moon, etc. I've got a wedding July 23 that I am holding out hope for. Moon rise is at 11:15, so hopefully will have an hour or so to try to make it happen before then!

Is that a composite ? On your Flickr page your camera settings say 30 secs , 400 ISO , f/4.0 but in your story they stood for 1 min which I agree is a long time but understandable . Good capture tho.

Yes, they were in hurry after the wedding exit, they had to get back to town for more wedding shenanigans, so I took the foreground shots as fast as possible. This one might have been 30 seconds for the foreground, we tried pretty hard to get one with a 1 minute exposure but it was just impossible to get them to stand perfectly still for that long. If I remember correctly we tried 4-5 shots with 1 minute exposures and then I took just this one with a 30 second exposure. After they left I hung around and took the sky shots with my iOptron Skytracker, those were 2 minute exposures if I remember correctly. Honestly we were all really exhausted and I'm kind of surprised they turned out at all, I was having a hell of a time polar aligning the mount.

I used a small puck light with some tissue paper covering it to soften the light.

Here's one from the bottom on the Grand Canyon. If I had been smarter I would have focused a lot more on astro photography while I was there...
