Most people would walk past the barrel scene and dismiss it as "ugly industrial neighborhood" and not see anything worth recording. The messiness you describe, I don't think is a fault. The minor objects play a supporting role by making the whole picture more complex.
I think you hit several nails on the head. First, do you want to make images like everyone else's images? I would say that is creative disaster. And second why not use the environment that you are in? I love this quote by Ansel Adams referring to Stieglitz's work.
