Spent a couple of days on the road with Barenaked Ladies. I've a ton of photos to go through, but here's one I especially like, taken at Volvo Car Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina:

hmmm, is this meant to be an end of set photo? You really need to get higher so you can see the crowd for this to work man.

Stand on the drum throne and get a shot of the crowd man!!! You've got a great opportunity!

I'm with BJ on this. This is just shots of four dude's butts. You were there, so they mean something to you. The trick is to make them mean something to someone who wasn't there.

Well, as I was specifically told not to get on the drum riser, getting on the drum throne would've been impossible.

You said to show the crowd for the shot to work. So, I show the crowd and you say doesn't work; I blew a "great opportunity". The fact of the matter is that they didn't want me on the drum riser, so the opportunity you refer to never actually presented itself...

Four guys taking a bow in front of a crowd, which is visible.

How would you have improved the shot?

Not being snarky; I'm genuinely interested...

Ok, if you were not allowed on the drum riser I would have stood at the front of it and raised my hand as high as possible above their head level to get a wide shot looking down on them.

I'm a little confused tho, I mean it looks as tho they wanted you to take an end of show shot, but they restricted the way you could do it?

Doubt you would have one there, but a Monopod can be used to get a higher shot as well. Timed or remote shutter release.

Yes, that is exactly correct...

Just out of curiosity, what were you shooting the show for?

How did you find them to shoot? I didn't even bother last time they came to town as they are not an "active" band and a shot of them 5 years ago looks the same as a shot 5 days ago.

Wow, I couldn't disagree with that more.

Well, on this current tour their stage set-up for the first three songs isn't really conducive to dynamic photography, so I'll concede that. That said, I have photos of plenty of bands which don't "change" what they do too often. On prior tours (this was my 9th time shooting them) they've been a lot of fun to shoot...

I see.

I'd be pushing for better access next time if it were me.

if it were part of a large set and it was the last photo, I could get into the shot, but as is it's just the back of 4 guys. Nothing interesting going on, just backsides.
