but I dont quite understand why you choose a rather low end video card for such a nice rig

It rates 229% better than my current system card and my budget made me make decisions on where to best spend the money. Therefore I stuck w/ the stock card and it will be updated at a later time.

sorry I was replying to mr Erik Klein's post
I do understand that you bought a brand name computer but he seems to have assembled his own just like me so I was simply wondering about his choice of video card

I didn't realize that was directed at me. There was a fixed budget - the boy is 14 - and tradeoffs were made. The hope is that the Christmas money this year is enough for shiny new video cards...

All the Pascal cards should be very cheap by then so it's a good plan :D

I wouldn't count on it. Given Nvidea's past I doubt you'll see the Pascal cards dropping below $350 or so for quite a while... up until the end of last year it was hard to find a GTX 970 for less than that even after the R9 390 came out.

That's kind of why I think it's so funny that so many people are acting like buying a 980 or 980 Ti is the dumbest thing ever right now... it's not when you consider that you can find 980 Ti's for less than $375 right now and 980's for less than $325 and they honestly don't perform that much worse if you look at all the 3rd party (not directly from Nvidea) review benchmarks, especially since most people are finding that there's generally better overclocking overhead on the Haswell cards.

We were at Best Buy the other day to get a new mouse. (As an aside, $70 for a MOUSE?????) and he was fondling the 1080.

More than he can afford, I'm afraid... So far, anyway.

His birthday and Christmas are close together so he may have a shot at one...

Yep. That's where we bought his parts for this build.

The mouse was just a "hey, isn't Best Buy around the corner? I'd love to finally get..."

Funny part was that he was looking at a keyboard as well and we were checking out the various mechanical keyswitch units. Those run $100 and up, of course. He decided that he didn't need a new one but would just take one of my many IBM Model M keyboards instead.

I've never been prouder.

:-D

He was offered a new-in-box unit but was horrified that I'd even suggest that. He pulled a used one from "The Pile (tm)" and cleaned it up nicely.
