Heya,
The weather has been nice, so wanted to try to do some July 4th photos of my daughter as a yearly thing. She's only 2.5 years old, and turning 3 this year in October. I planned it for a late day, 8pm actually here in Florida, as that's when the sun finally drops just a wink below the tree horizon in my yard (there's still sun out well towards 9pm here right now!). I didn't want fully sun, but wanted the bit of glow from it as natural light in the environment as I was not going to use HSS nor a ND filter for this, just good old fashioned sync speed, and meter the light to make it work as just a tad above what fill light would be. I had metered the light the day before and knew that I could shoot at 1/200s, F2.8 and ISO 100 and get a pretty general ambient exposure of the scene in my front yard that I was going to use, without it blowing out the sky (it did in some cases still), and to get a decent ambient exposure that allows a little pop of the subject with a light by being a slightly under-exposed ambient. 8pm it was.
The setup:
Florida, 8pm. Sun just starts to drop below tree horizon, on camera left.
My front yard, we freshly had the field moved & baled so it was clear.
A little wooden crate we use sometimes that we made & stained.
Some left over hay that missed the baler used to just add a little mess to it all.
A huge watermelon that came from a local field that we saved for this, good and ripe too.
Camera: Canon 5D classic
Lens: Tamron 90mm F2.8 VC Macro
Ambient Camera Settings: 1/200s, F2.8, ISO 100
No ND filters, no filter at all used. Just good old sync speed.
Transceiver: Yongnuo RF603c
Light: Rovelight 600B (no gels used)
Modifier: Neewer 47" Brolly Soft Box (so light weight and simple, I use this all the time these days)
Stand: Cheetah Boom Stand with counter weights (waters) & my typical nylon stake into the ground and bungee cord to anchor
Transceiver: Yongnuo RF603c
Light Meter: Sekonic L478D (metered F2.5 light with Rovelight at 1/64 power, with 1/200 & ISO 100 programmed)
Note: for metering, I wanted it just a bit over fill light, so I metered to F2.8 initially to match my aperture, then dropped it a bit more to be just below F2.8 to get it closer to fill.
No HSS used, no ND filters, etc. Just basic manual strobing.
A 2.5 year old kid.
Her mom to cheer and corral.
And a lot of hope.
Note: she was so cooperative, played with the watermelon and super expressive, it was so easy for once!
Note: She did all those cute hand positions herself with her mom cheering her on to pose. What a ham!
