Just as a reminder you're allowed to do some long exposures with this amazing IS, one shot!

I enjoy the departure from the "must have everything sharp" zombies

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Even though I bought this lens a little while ago, I typically always grab my 600/4 or 400/5.6 when I am birding. I either need all the reach I can get my hands on, or I want a lens that won't zoom creep (probably the only thing I don't like about the 100-400).

I finally took it out with my 7D2 on the weekend and captured this beautiful Sacred Kingfisher. Full image, no cropping and handheld (so the IS helped a lot).

If you turn the tension ring all the way tight it should not zoom creep.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

True but it is then hard to zoom. It's okay, I don't mind it, but when I want to work with a body and lens hanging off my shoulder as a second setup, I find a prime best for that.

If you haven't used the lens much this is true. It does loosen up very slightly and this makes a difference. If you then place the tightening ring almost at fully tight there is a spot that makes it work perfectly.

I do want to say it isn't perfect but you can get it very close.
I found that placing it on fully tight and then working it in by moving it back and forth about 100 times breaks it in nicely.
The magic spot on the tension ring of good smooth tension and no, or virtually no creep, is 'about' 2/3rds towards the tight setting if the camera is hanging down.
If you are going to be moving / walking, then place it on fully tight while doing so - and then back to approx. 2/3rds (while the lens is new, but after you have done the 100 back and forths for break in while fully tight, it could be slightly closer towards 1/2 way than 2/3rds but should still be more than 1/2.
