Ive had the 100-400 on rental before and enjoyed it.

The extra reach is always nice. Mostly be shooting wildlife and surfing, planes etc.

I travel quite a bit and always take the 100-400. The Sigma is huge, both in size and weight, so I can't justify the extra weight of the Sigma.
I can handhold the Canon all day long with no problems. The Sigma is a bear and I use it on a gimbal most of the time. Wouldn't want to hold it too long.
I would give an edge in optical quality to the Canon, but in my opinion, both lenses are very good. If I absolute had to pick between the two, I would probably grab the Canon.
That being said, the Sigma has some advantages too, mainly reach and range. I hate having to put the extender on the canon and also haven't been happy with the results. Also, with the extender on the Canon, I am limited to F8 and centre point focus.
So, I just typed this out, and now realize that I probably haven't been a damn bit of help to you ! :-P. ...
Get them both !!!

I just sold my 70-200 2.8 II

Im debating over this and the 100-400 II, ill be using it on a 1DX

Any thoughts people?

imho, if absolute IQ and AF is your priority, the 100-400 II is the lens to get

but if reach is more important than the sigma is a no brainer

IQ is already very good wide open, AF speed while won't be as fast as the canon it's no slouch either and just as important it's very accurate

it is a heavy lens but i am often out with it for hours at a time 100% handheld with just a r-strap, couple pages back there is a pic of an eastern yellow robin a shot handheld 1/80 shutter at 600mm, you'll get used to the weight in no time

don't forget there is still the option with a 1.4x TC for it to become a f/9 840mm lens with auto focus

Two great responses there, thank you very much shooz basketballfreak6, the size and weight won't be too much of an issue for me. I do like the idea of the extra range, I did also use the canon 2x III extender on my 70-200 and wasn't that thrilled with it. I could go down the route of getting both but I don't think my bag will fit them both in :p

Thanks guys, I'm leaning towards the sigma for the reach just now.

Thanks for the great replies.

QUOTED IMAGE

Beauty shot Mike! Hoping I'll be even remotely as fortunate in a few weeks with a huge airshow in Abbotsford.
