New Nikon 105 f1.4E....Thoughts (besides Freaking Awesome!)?

I know people will complain and say they want 135 f1.8, VR, yada yada, but this is still really cool IMO. That's a super fast aperture for that focal length.

If it is a decent size/weight, fast AF and sharp edge-to-edge, I would probably sell my Zeiss 2/135 for this.

Curious as to people's thoughts on this focal length and aperture combo (having never shot a 105 prime myself).

Way overpriced at $2100, from what I've heard and saw about the optics in the Zeiss 135 f2 I wouldn't give that one up for the new Nikon. The Nikon 135 f2 needs updating before the 105 so if the rumor is true of the 105 f1.4 release date it is disappointing Nikon chose that one first.

I agree that it will be very difficult match the optics of the Zeiss, which are spectacular (plus the all metal construction is awesome). That said, fast accurate AF in an otherwise very sharp lens would make me seriously consider it.

People are saying that this will be a 105 version of the 58G - slightly soft wide open but with beautiful rendering and a "3D" effect in the transition to OOF and bokeh. I've not shot the 58G on the D810, but I suspect the slight softness wide open would bother me and be too distracting on the high rez sensor.

Nevertheless, it is still a really cool offering from Nikon and I can't wait to see the creative things people will do with a 1.4 DOF at 105mm.

Not overpriced if it does end up being a f/1.4. That's a pretty big aperture for a 105. I'm very interested to see what comes of this rumor

Not sure how I feel about this, especially the price. If you think about it, for $1K more you can get a used 200 f/2 VR1 which is a much more versatile lens in terms of focus speed and focal length. I'd buy it.. but I'll wait a couple of years when it's available on the used market for a lot less.

I will probably sell two lenses, and get the new Nikon 105 f1.4e in a month, when it's available.
I guess I could do without my 85G 1.4. Just have to figure out which zoom to sell along with it.

My prime kit would be really epic though, in my view, 20G 28G 58G 105G.
dual wielding with 28/58 and 58/105 would be nice.

I think it is over price but it is also special lens. Just sold my 70-200VRII and now im waing for new 70- 200 which I think more versatile than 105 but i have to leave with 2.8 vs 1.4 and I am pretty sure 70-200 will focus faster. So its really depends on what your shooting style.

So far with what has been released with sample images I would say it's a few notches below awe-inspiring. Anything over the $2000 mark better be truly capable of making heads turn with more than a f1.4 aperture.

If the IQ matches something of the 200 F2s then you have a success. 85mm to 105mm is only a slight difference the 105 only providing a slighty change in background perspective. I find them to be pretty close. I commend Nikon for providing something out of the box but to me this is their band aide for not having a 85 1.2.

That's an interesting graph, I had been considering picking up a 200 f2 for some extreme subject isolation but at well over $5k it's a bit out of reach. The 105mm f1.4 could be the perfect solution and more versatile than the 200mm too.

I'll try and rent one for a few days when they come out and see what I think though.

Welp, first shoot with this beast
I got many more keepers with this, than I expected.

Worth noting that I use LR6 EXCLUSIVELY. for ALL pp.
I don't have any purchased filters of any sort, plug-ins, or 3rd party modules.

I don't add sharpness.
I just mess with a couple sliders in LR and boom.

I have not done any af micro adjust testing yet.

Modes, today I was shooting A mode @ 1.4
utilizing auto iso, with base 64
minimum ss 125
auto2 w/b

I think it may have that "it" factor

nothing crazy, just a couple real world examples
I only got the lens a few hours ago!
