Wish I had just a bit more reach than the 70-200mm. Maybe next year.

And both of you need to learn how to lower your shutter speeds to get some prop blur. Look at all the submissions with prop blur & you decide which looks correct.

It would had required using a ND filter to get down to 1/60 as it was 1pm and pretty bright. I have shots that I went for prop blur that turned out well. Also with my very dirty sensor I would had spent a ton more time cleaning the shots.

But thanks for the advice. :-)

No, you don't need an ND filter, and you don't need 1/60th to get decent prop blur. Looking at the EXIF, you shot it at 1/1250, f/4.4, and ISO 320. First, drop the ISO as low as your camera will go - ISO 100 if you can, then close down the aperture, you don't need to be nearly so wide. You can get decent prop blur at 1/200 or 1/250, and at ISO 100 should have an aperture that works. Yes, you will likely have some dust spots - I've had shots that looked like I sneezed on my sensor, but you work with what you have.

Both of these are at 1/250, f/13, ISO 100 and both were taken between 1 and 2pm on a sunny afternoon - no, you're not going to get a full circle of prop blur, but it's obvious the prop is turning.

I'm saying I knew what I needed to do to get the prop blur. I get to go to 1 airshow maybe every 3 years and this is only my 2nd try. Last year (and the last airshow) I still had an xti and a 28-135IS lens. This year I stepped up to the 1dmkiii. For this outing also dragging on a wagon my tired 8 year old I went for capturing in focus all the shots I could of flying aircraft which meant I purposely left the ss higher to capture everything from the f18 to the prop planes. I do have shots that I slowed the shutter speed to about 1/100th to get proper prop blur.

I was just happy with the shots I got as I never get an opportunity to play at an airshow. If I go alone next time and bring a monopod and concentrate I will get proper prop blur shots. I do appreciate the lesson, and always take criticism to better my craft, and will try to utilize the better equipment to my benefit next time.

I can understand you don't do aircraft much
My tip along with others is to go for the safety shots first and for props typically 1/360th to (1/500th extreme for props) to ensure you get what you want.
Aircraft displays usually do a number of passes where you can then lower shutter for each pass. I set up my C1 and C2 for props and jets. Simple switch
After my safety shots I drop down to 1/200th or slower if you have good panning ability.

Custom functions on the selector dial. I guess the 1Ds don't have that.

This is just your standard 1929 biplane replica with a lear jet engine attached. lol Pretty funny to see this screaming across the sky and hear the roar of a jet engine.

I agree! I love all your shots!

I also agree on the prop blur, I tried shooting slower but it's not easy when panning 5 aircraft, maybe when I have more experience with air shows - this was my 1st one ever!
