Replace the wording of "Pokemon Go player" with "Person going about their daily life" in any of those news stories, and things get far less sensational without distorting the actual facts.

There's a little more to it because using a phone that way can be misinterpreted. In one report, a man was stabbed by an assailant who thought the player was looking persistently at him and his girlfriend.

Yes, but would it really be any different if the person was sitting there checking their Facebook account, email, or any other application on their phone?

It would be because walking around looks so different from sitting there. The way P-Go players move, they might be thought to be following someone. And there are violent people who take offense very easily.

It's funny how this thread has become a bit goofy!

Anyways, over the years, I've bounced around with my camera(s), and, well, "anything goes"...street photography, events, sports, hey, like I said, when you're out in public, well, "anything goes"...

Now, things have normally been, well, cool, in fact I've had some street people be downright playful, although there was this one guy on a bus who looked rather serious:

For something different, I've had some lady friends who have wanted to have outings at a nearby "nude beach", with me packing a camera -- well, talk about interesting photo op! Things went by without incident, except for when one day the friend I was with decided that she wanted to get involved in a volleyball game, fun, I sat down with my camera, nice pics (none to show here)...

Well, at some point a couple "young ladies" showed up in bikinis -- maybe around 18, maybe in their 20s, who knows. But at some point one came up to me and complained because I had taken photos, and then they left, Oh Well...although they were photogenic playing volleyball/1 :)

Anyway, on track -- one time I was bouncing around a local park. It had one of those skateboarding setups, I got a few shots of the boys bouncing around, and then moved on. I came upon a "dog park", a fenced area where you can walk in and unleash your dog,and a good time can be had! I happen to be a dog-lover, so I stopped to grab some photos, hey, people and their dogs having fun!

Well, at some point I headed out. I was bicycling, so I hopped on my bike and headed down the (public) road, when all of a sudden, an SUV swerved in front of me and stopped. Fortunately I was able to stop without slamming into the thing. A guy hopped out, came around and started accusing me of oggling his daughter st the dog park. I didn't know what the heck he was talking about, and he actually acknowledged that neither he or his wife saw me taking photos of this daughter, but they claimed that I was "looking" and to him that gave him cause to ride out and run me on my bicycle off the road...

Well, I did my best to be peaceable, and in fact things ended up without further incident. I have, though pondered:

If, in that incident anyone would have been in "trouble" it would have been the husband/father for for using his vehicle against me on my bicycle in that way. In fact, as I came to the forced stop, I could have pulled out my cell phone and dialed 911, and as we had our conversation, the cops would have come, and with the evidence of his SUV blocking my bicycle, well, not so good for that husband/father. Well, I didn't make that call, but if that were to happen to me again, well...?

You can easily get into big trouble doing nothing.

A few months ago I was in Peterborough, Ontario, and went out to a nice park on a pretty lake to do some bug photography. It was a beautiful warm sunny day. I got various nice shots.

Macro photography can be tiring, especially on a hot day. So on my way back I found a nice park bench and sat down, camera on my lap, relaxing and enjoying the day. I was maybe 20-30 ft from the shore of the lake, with a bunch of brush and small trees in between. I noticed a guy fishing, in front of me by the lake. There was another person, I thought maybe his wife or a friend.

After 5 or 10 minutes of relaxing, the fisherman emerges from the bushes and starts shouting at me. He is accusing me of taking pictures of him and his son (OK, so that other person was his son). Picks up a 6-foot piece of wood that is lying on the ground and the shouting heats up. Gets out his phone and demands my name so he can look my name up in the pedophile directory. All the while I'm still sitting there on my bench, not moving, not saying anything, camera in my lap and pointed off to the side.

Wielding this 6 foot piece of lumber, the guy is getting madder and madder, and is demanding I say something.

Peterborough is not my town, I was just visiting. I guess I could have pulled out my phone and called 911, but wouldn't have been able to describe my location very well. Besides, getting out my phone might have provoked him more. So I didn't bother to do that.

The guy is now threatening to phone the police. I finally open my mouth and tell him to go ahead, I'll wait for them. But he doesn't follow through.

A couple of middle-aged ladies happen to pass by. One says, what's going on here? The guy points at me and accuses me of taking pictures. The lady says this is a public park, he can take any pics he wants to. There is some more discussion, with the lady basically saying chill, it is a nice day, enjoy it. Guy comes to his senses, puts down the lumber, goes to get his son, and the two of them hurry away without making eye contact with me.

So this is the kind of trouble you can get into from just sitting on a public bench in a park with a camera on your lap.
