My wife just uses the SL1 with 24 2.8 pancake.

M3's AF speed is quite a bit better than the original M, but it's still a lot slower than DSLR or other ILS cameras. especially with a 22/2 pancake (kit zoom is faster to focus) and it's not great for chasing kids.
if you want a small and fast camera, have a look at the micro 4/3 range.
something like Panasonic LX100 (fixed fast zoom, but no build-in flash), or Olympus E-P5 or OM-D E-M10 (MkI or MkII) with a 14-42mm EZ pancake zoom or a couple of small fast primes will do nicely.
or just get her an SL1 and call it a day

The M3 with the 22 pancake definitely focuses slow. I have a 2yo and if he's moving around at all, it is extremely difficult to focus on him and get a decent shot. I expected it to be slower than my DSLR, but it isn't much faster than a point and shoot in my experience. It focuses a little quicker with the 18-55. Using my L lenses on it with the adapter have been pretty much a fail. Much slower focusing. For that purpose, I've been very disappointed by it. But, for everything else that doesn't need fast AF, it has been great. Small, light, good IQ, hot shoe, touch and flip out screen, etc.

Thanks for the input. Have you had any experience w/ the original M? I had it twice both with 22mm so I'm familiar w/ it's slowness... not sure how much faster the M3 is.

I have both the original M and M3. M3 is faster, but not 6 times faster, as Canon wrote (it's possible, that they compared AF speed with the original firmware). 22/2 is a bit slow even in single shot AF. The fastest to focus lenses with the EF/EF-S adapter were 10-18stm, 18-135stm and 85/1.8usm - they were as fast as the 18-55 ef-m stm kit zoom. 70-200L is slower, sigma 30/1.4 was the slowest to focus and made weird clicking noise while focussing.
If you want a good capable camera with a small footprint, fast AF, high fps and in-body image stab - have a good look at Oly Pen or Oly OM-D range. It's posdible to use Canon lenses with AF and aperture control with a speedboost adapter on Oly cameras.
My OM-D E-M10 II runs circles around my M3 and is almost as fast as a DSLR in single shot mode, focus tracking isn't great, but I rarely need it.

Thanks for the input. I just asked the wife what she didn't like about the SL1 and she didn't like the 9 AF points and found the outer points to be unreliable. She loves the 80D focusing however. Just the size issue
