I never thought this was on the Kingfisher's diet, but she caught this crab, whacked it around a bit, and tossed it down. Surely a fish would have been tastier! (not to mention easier to swallow). I had good light and a good angle for these, off my new deck down by the river. No camo!!

3. Thwapping the crab, as Al would say...

4. Thwapping is necessary to remove the claws, which might get hung up on the way down.

Great shots, Ian. I know I have shots somewhere of one eating a crayfish.

Thanks Al, it had to hurt going down!

Thank you Linh. If I don't move around at all, they're OK with landing on the branch I nailed to my dock about 25 feet away :)

Thanks Sandy. Just built the deck by the river this spring and it's getting good use!

Thanks much Eric. We have loads of Kingfishers here on the river, and two pairs that hang out in my corner. Just need to be patient (eagles have taught me that) and wait for them to land on their branch in the later afternoon, at the right level of tide. The stars need to be aligned :)

Thanks Bob, Yea I think so. I didn't even know we had crabs in the river. Now I hope they don't grab my foot when I go for a swim.

Great captures!! Especially with the crab claw falling.
Perhaps she was wanting some crunch in her diet!

Super set Ian.

He look "proud" in the last shot, like: "Showed you, didn't I"..... :)
