Thank you! Yeah, I loved how that was set up. I had the family stand just on the line between light and shadow and the dark background helped make them pop. Yeah I love the 35/135 combo on the 5D :-)

That cow face is really sweet. :D I'm thinking of getting a wider angle prime for landscapes because zooms are expensive . Is 35mm far enough from the 50? Or one of the 24/28's?

Some from the weekend roadtrip:

Thanks vasher, excellent shots!! It really depends on your personal preferences. I like my 35 a lot and use it for almost everything (I have owned the old model and currently own the 35 f2 IS). From time to time, I miss the 24mm end of my 24-105. 24 seems a little more "epic" wide, the 35 seems a little more normal wide if that makes sense. You may want to check out the 17-40L for wide on a budget, you can get those for around $400-500 used.

I've been really happy with my 35 f2 so far. I hung on to my 50 1.8, but I haven't used it since getting the 35. Thinking I might pick up the 85mm next.

^Yeah the older version of the 35 f2 can be had for around $250 and it's a really great wide budget prime. I'm sure you would enjoy the 85 :-).

The 5D coupled with the Canon 24-105, they work well together....here is an example of
"complimentary colors"....French Quarter door, New Orleans....

I'm tempted to go that route, too (24-105 F/4 L). Something about primes I like though. I think I like that it requires more use of my brain, lol. I used to walk around with my XTI and a Sigma 10-20 almost exclusively, though I was primarily shooting landscapes and old buildings. I also would really like a 70-200, lol.

What do you all find the best meter setting to avoid blowing out highlights? I'm sure I could fine-tune far better during PP, but I was just curious. Thanks.

Yeah I really like my 24-105 when I'm outdoors mostly and on vacation as an all in one. I still find that I need the 35 prime to help in low light situations with the 5D's somewhat "limited" ISO. I use it mostly for the 24mm end, but sometimes use the whole range.

But I know what you mean, I find myself mostly using primes too. Primes and full frame seem to go along so well together. They say limitations breed creativity, so I think that helps.

I had the 70-200 f4L non IS and IS models. I loved them on crop (used to shoot motorsports and cars primarily on a 7D), but didn't really like the range on full frame. I may be the only one like that, lol. I also didn't like it since it was a larger lens and somewhat hard to pack. It drew a lot of attention at weddings and events where I just wanted to blend in. I ended up hardly using it and it was time to sell it for something else. I sold mine and bought the 135L and can hardly put that lens down.

The 17-40mm looks pretty tempting, but the 16-35 looks amazing! But also 2x the money, woe. I will have patience! I've found the evaluative metering does pretty well for keeping highlights, at least during bright days. Tends to heavy underexpose the ground, but it seems nicer to fade shadows into black than try to rescue blown highlights.

From last weekend, might lighten the shadows a little more. Who is going stargazing this weekend? :-)

Great stuff in here! The 5D Classic is still a CLASSIC!

I remember when the first iteration of this thread came out, back in 2008, and we users had already adopted it as a "Classic", and, hey, it keeps on going!

By the way, I've seen some folks mention battery problems, that's not happened to me -- try a few battery types. It's funny, though, you don't want to get "caught" without a spare battery or a spare memory card, or in a low-light situation, without spare flash batteries!

All that being said, the 5D Classic has continued to be a favorite all-around camera. I don't recall what all I've posted on these threads, but still...
