Heya,

Woke up this morning out of the blue around 5am. The moon was still in a fairly good spot and I had about an hour & a half before day light would start creeping in. Quickly took some video with my new camera and my 6 inch SCT telescope.

Ignore the EXIF, I had to put random stuff since the forum software doesn't have options for scopes & CCD cameras, etc. See end of post for equipment details.

Mosaic (12 individual panels stitched, around 40MP):

Equipment used:

GSO 2x Barlow

Some old Dell laptop to capture video with via SharpCap

Unfortunately there's no scope on Earth that can resolve the flag due to Dawes limit.

Interesting stuff: http://calgary.rasc.ca/moonscope.htm (external link)

It's actually inexpensive astrophotography gear. Total cost is equivalent to a single new 100-400 II for everything I listed.

The camera I'm using is a small sensor that I chose purposefully for the increased crop factor (4.84) while still being of good resolution (6.3MP) and having pretty good sensitivity. That means my 1500mm telescope has the field of view equivalent to 7,260mm if you were using a full frame. And when I used my 2x barlow, it's a 3000mm telescope, and that crop factor gives me a field of view that would require a 14,520mm focal length for a full frame. As you can imagine, these are crazy focal lengths for "full frame" dSLR world. So we move into more dedicated gear for such things.

The big difference being that I'm recording video and producing a single image from the video. It's a common practice for things like the sun, moon and planets.

Very best,
