I would certainly hope it would be less than the 5D3 was at launch.

The 7D2 is a more capable camera with more bells and whistles and more advanced AF, (Vs. 5D3) and it launched at nearly $2K less than the 5D3 launched. <<<--- (OK, I admit, that's some heavy rounding!)

You can not tell me that a full frame sensor costs near $2K more than APS-c. (6D proves this)

It just seems to me that with the 7D2's price point now established, Canon HAS to be more realistic in the pricing of the 5D4.

Fingers crossed.

At the same time, I also understand that the 5D3 is already a very good competitor with the 7D2 for what it does. 5D4 is newer, FF etc,. IMHO around or just under $3K would seem more reasonable.

On a personal level, If it's $1K more than 7D2 (approx $2,700.00) I may be able to jump right in. If it's over $3k, I won't be part of the launch party :)

tend to agree, that way they can include the new 24-105 for approx 3799 and keep the kit under 4 grand.

I'll most likely buy a 24-105II kit so I can sell the lens and bring the cost of the camera down. Should be able to walk away at 3k for the 5D4 that way.

The 24-105ii may be a killer, if only I could justify lol

I hope your right. They already said 300k Yen and at the time the 7D2 was released the yen was around the same exchange rate as it is now. 300k = 2,999 for the camera and probably still 3699 for the lens kit.

That would be amazing if it holds true.

I've been keeping my eyes on the 24-105ii. If the price is right, it sure will replace my 1st version for the up coming trip across the world in Jan. I think Canon will still price the body at around 3299 and with the kit around 3799? What do I know? Lol...

rumor thread put it at 1K..... one hell of a deal if optics top notch. It will gain in size, near the size of the 24-70ii.

I just did some research on 5D launch pricing over time.

5D - 2005 - US$3299 - 389k Yen
5DII - 2008 - US$2699 - 291k Yen
5DIII - 2012 - US$3499 - 283k Yen

At today's exchange rate the 5DIII's price would be US$2824.

I bought my original 5D in 2008 for under $2000, just a few months before the Mark II launched. I was shocked when the Mark III launched at $3499 and didn't buy one until I was able to snag a "nearly new" one on POTN for $2750 about 18 months later. If the Mark IV launches under $3000, I'll probably jump on it sooner rather than later before the value of my current camera declines into oblivion like my 5D did.

I think the pricing is more interesting discussion than the actual camera itself.

5D to MK2 - Seemed to have reacted to the exchange rate.
MK3 to MK3 - Raised price substantially yet Yen dropped slightly.

We are now where it 'should' be around 3000-3200 but I don't think the price is going down. 3500US means it would be 351k Yen. Or almost back to the original high point at initial release. People expect prices to go up with each version. I think we might see it more than 3499. And Canon can take the extra profits to the bank. With that said if I was taking a stab. 3499 and the new grip will go up in price from previous. Maybe seen 4000+ with a grip.

Why is that? The vast majority of electronics get better and cheaper over time.

I watched prices on used gear for about 8-10 years. One thing that I found was that digital cameras declined in market value an an Annual Depreciation Rate of 35% per year...every TWO years the gear sold for 50% of the price that was effective 2 years earlier. An $8000 body could be had 4 years later for $2K, after 6 years it was down to $1K. Look at the original 1D as an example. There were a few products like the 5D that did not happen to -- until the replacement model (5DII) came out.

I hope it's super awesome and the cost comes down fast, like the 7D2 came down really fast and can be had for a song these days it seems.

That way I can get a 5DSR cheaper! :D

Very best,

While true for 'general electronics' it seems to not hold true for the dSLR. Rarely see lines lowering prices. I think a lot of this
is due to the fact that for the most part they are not making huge strides in tech and on top of that I doubt manufacturing
tech. IE making it cheaper to make. Also consider to something like a TV it is not exactly a high volume item.

Assume updated 24-105 will be amazing. I foresee 999.99 for the lens. Deal if you buy it in a kit.

I must have been watching other lines,
The 1D was tending to go down (or stay the same, same thing with 1Ds line) up until they "X'ed" it.

1Dx II launched for less than 1Dx.

XXd was going down. Started as a $3,200.00 camera! (D30) , leveled off at $1,500.00 for many years, then dropped again.

5d as mentioned went way down from original to "2". The jump in price for the 5D3 appeared to make sense when it went from the middling performer it was in the previous versions to a half sized 1Dx that could EASILY be put to any task a photographer could dream up for an SLR.

Exactly - it's like flagship smartphones; they tend to come out at around the same price as the previous model, because they're packing more tech than the previous generation.

Obviously there's also inflation to contend with; whereby exactly the same item costs more today than it did yesterday (though obviously in theory your salary will have increased by inflation to match too).

I think for us folks in the UK it will more expensive then the mk3 because of the brexit. Already prices of various electronics have shot up the roof as much as 20% more expensive.
