Just had my 3rd daughter last Tuesday and figured I would give it a shot. I will say it is a lot harder than I thought and I still have a lot to learn but I am quite pleased with my first attempt. CC always welcomed as I would like some of you newborn photogs to give me some tips and advice.

First two look nice to me.

I would use a large diffuse softbox/brolly box to soften up the mottled skin (all newborns have it). But blend the exposure so that you don't just have black environment.

The last two with the black environment look like obvious flash and/or just overt processing. #3 looks almost like a copy paste into a black space, I would toss that one completely.

Very best,

Newborns are hard. I would research some posing techniques so she isn't just lying on her back.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

The 1st three photographs have the nearest edge of the basket in pin sharp focus which I found the eye naturally drawn to. For me I would chose the last as my favourite however I would liked to have seen less of the black background (well none of it actually!). Lighting seems spot on & the model looks relaxed too :)

Nice work... The lighting is a little harsh for newborns, keep working on it!
