I been looking at it online and it looks FAB kind of like when you have been serching for a house for many many years, then you find a place that ticks all the boxes and then some, but you stop dreaming and reality kicks in - But how am I gonna find the money for that? - and the wife would kill me if i did:-(

I've owned the D800 since switching over from Canon and the 1DS MIII. Great camera and once you see pics at its sensors full 36mp resolution it's hard to imagine not having them all the time. With that being said I picked up a Nikon D2h for sports not to long ago and am happy not having to deal with loading and viewing 2000 shots at 36mps onto the computer. Dealing with 4mp vs 36mp shops in that case is so much faster, lol.

Here is a shot taken with the D800/200 f2 ai-s wide open. The second is a crop from the original file.

A couple of shots taken at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo that were pretty heavily cropped. When I get a chance I will locate the original file so you can see just how much cropping was done to the original image.

F.Y.I. my next purchase is going to be a Nikon CoolPix P900, that 24-2000 telezoom is just to tempting to pass up for casual walk around shooting.

Do you think it looses much if cropped to the eqv of its DX mode of 15Mp? I know it is comparable to the D7000 in that mode, but wonder if it is still a better option?

I personally believe that shooting with a ff sensor and cropping is a better option than shooting in the DX mode. I shoot mostly portraits or landscapes so the DX mode is of no use to me and the 36mp sensor is everything I need in a sensor. However, if I were shooting sports or say birds with a body I would go with a body that has better auto focusing suited for that type of photography, either ff or dx.

To answer your question though, I don't think it loses much in image detail if cropped to its DX mode of 15mp. I will include a couple of photos that you can follow back to my flickr and download the full size jpegs if you like. With the heat and humidity we had where I live today there weren't any birds or turtles sunning outside my house that were willing to cooperate, but I'll give it another shot in a day or two to get more interesting subjects.

Note: All images were taken with the D800 and 200 f2 ai-s lens @ f/8 with the exception of the last two which also had modified TC16-A which allows the ai-s lens limited auto focusing. The pics taken with the tc16-a are somewhat affected by not allowing it somewhat needed time to adjust being taken out of a different part of the house where it was cold as ice before placing it on the camera. It's since been moved to a better location.

Thanks for that my friend - much appreciated you doing that, Im in a kind of dream state at the moment and fantasizing about what would be the best nikon Bang for buck for my airways and BIF photography, I have considered the D7000 because of cost quite low i have been looking and reserching long zooms from the Nikon AF-S 70-300VR through to the Sigma 120-400 via the very good Sigma ex 100-300 f4 also the Tammy 70-300VF.
I have then dreamt even more and thought heck if money is no option and for a cam to last years and years and provide FF and DX, well at a fairly expensive but not shockingly D800 seen them for about £900 on flea bay.

Well its all la la land but nothing wrong in dreaming.

You're welcome, I live next to a river with plenty of wildlife and an airport next door. I am looking at the Nikon Coolpix P900 and that incredible zoom lens it has. With my tripod I think I can get some pretty spectacular photos after I get used to it. There are some quite good photo's on Flickr that have been taken with that camera.

I have tried a few super zoom bridge cams -

Canon SX10IS upto 560mm = not bad at all considering its age.
Lumix FZ100 upto 600mm = noise a problem as it was Jpeg only and had weird artifacts.
Lumix FZ72 upto 900mm = not as good as it should have been.
Lumix FZ330 upto 600mm = Brilliant sensor and AF Tracking but needs upto date LR6 + for RAWS.
Fuji X-S1 upto 600mm = Built like a tank real lens not motor driven, but Rubbish AF as you cant do BIF/Plane with it.

Hi rick,

Im just playing a bit of fantasy buying with no money;-)a I would love to get a siggy 400mm zoom and I was considering either the Nikon D7000 or the D800.
I love the idea of the multi talented D800 able to go from a FF cam using that gorgeous 36Mp sensor, but able to crop and with the 400mm lens end up with the fov eqv of a 600-700mm lens.

Any thoughts mate?

P.

Henry Doorly Zoo? I shoot there all the time myself, go pretty much every weekend. I've been seriously considering stepping up to a D800, I'm shooting a D600 currently. Fantastic captures!

With a choice of the Sigma 400mm lens I would go with the D800 to pair it with, that way you can shoot in ff or dx mode if you like.

Thanks, I'll be headed back there in a few weeks when hopefully the summer traffic dies down a bit to try out the Nikon Coolpix P900 I accidentally bought earlier today.

Note to self: Turn off 1 click buy when purchasing camera gear. I am happy I had just browsed away from the Pentax 645Z though, that would have been a bit harder to explain to the wife.

I guess for what I do - a D800 with a long zoom would be the best investment?

I think that is what I would be looking at with the D800's getting so low in price.Combine that with the 36mp sensor that can be switched over to the DX mode and you have quite a solid dslr/lens combo for your type of photography.

Of course the Nikon Coolpix P900 could be a game changer for me. If I'm impressed enough with the 24-2000 zoom it just might make me sell all my other Nikon gear. ;-)a
