Thorrulz Goldmember More info | Aug 28, 2016 04:54 | #4 I've owned the D800 since switching over from Canon and the 1DS MIII. Great camera and once you see pics at its sensors full 36mp resolution it's hard to imagine not having them all the time. With that being said I picked up a Nikon D2h for sports not to long ago and am happy not having to deal with loading and viewing 2000 shots at 36mps onto the computer. Dealing with 4mp vs 36mp shops in that case is so much faster, lol. IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/HaQKjw A couple of shots taken at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo that were pretty heavily cropped. When I get a chance I will locate the original file so you can see just how much cropping was done to the original image. Aug 28, 2016 14:08 | #5 Do you think it looses much if cropped to the eqv of its DX mode of 15Mp? I know it is comparable to the D7000 in that mode, but wonder if it is still a better option?

(3 edits in all) | Aug 29, 2016 18:04 | #6 I personally believe that shooting with a ff sensor and cropping is a better option than shooting in the DX mode. I shoot mostly portraits or landscapes so the DX mode is of no use to me and the 36mp sensor is everything I need in a sensor. However, if I were shooting sports or say birds with a body I would go with a body that has better auto focusing suited for that type of photography, either ff or dx. Flickr

Aug 29, 2016 18:19 | #7 Thanks for that my friend - much appreciated you doing that, Im in a kind of dream state at the moment and fantasizing about what would be the best nikon Bang for buck for my airways and BIF photography, I have considered the D7000 because of cost quite low i have been looking and reserching long zooms from the Nikon AF-S 70-300VR through to the Sigma 120-400 via the very good Sigma ex 100-300 f4 also the Tammy 70-300VF.

I am looking at the Nikon Coolpix P900 and that incredible zoom lens it has. With my tripod I think I can get some pretty spectacular photos after I get used to it. There are some quite good photo's on Flickr that have been taken with that camera. Flickr

Henry Doorly Zoo? I shoot there all the time myself, go pretty much every weekend. I've been seriously considering stepping up to a D800, I'm shooting a D600 currently. Fantastic captures!

Any thoughts mate?P. With a choice of the Sigma 400mm lens I would go with the D800 to pair it with, that way you can shoot in ff or dx mode if you like. robbins.photo wrote in post #18114848 Henry Doorly Zoo? Thanks, I'll be headed back there in a few weeks when hopefully the summer traffic dies down a bit to try out the Nikon Coolpix P900 I accidentally bought earlier today. Flickr

Sep 03, 2016 22:10 | #14 I guess for what I do - a D800 with a long zoom would be the best investment?

P. I think that is what I would be looking at with the D800's getting so low in price.Combine that with the 36mp sensor that can be switched over to the DX mode and you have quite a solid dslr/lens combo for your type of photography.
