I've already learned about shutter speed for the propeller for next time, and I've been practicing holding that heavy lens steady. I should have used my monopod, but I was worried about missing the plane altogether. Hence, the cut off tail (and the tons of out of focus shots).

If that is the only in focus shot that isn't suffering from camera shake/poor panning, then one idea might be to crop even tighter. By doing that you make it look like a deliberate act, rather than an error.
