Now that's a good-looking Black-capped Chickadee!

Thanks but you are too kind.
At least we have them year around.

since you made the comment that you are learning the camera, my observation would be that after enough pictures with the 5DSR, i wouldn't end up with the settings that you used
- you have a picture that you aren't exactly tying to keep the background sharp
- you shot at 1/200 and ISO 100
- you have a high DR scenario so you likely want to keep ISO low for potentially lifting shadows (not for sure but maybe)

i would have gone with
- F4 (nothing in the background is needed - maybe F5.6 if you want as sharp as possible
- 1/320 - 1/400 (the IS is good on the lens but given you shot at F7.1 and ISO 100 I would go for faster = sharper)
- ISO 160-200 (you aren't losing much DR at this jump so it is worth it to pick up sharpness)

on a 5DSR with a 70-200 F2.8 II IS, my experience is that 1/200 & F7.1 ISO 100 is not as good as F4 / F5.6 ISO 160/200

once I used a 5DSR for a few weeks my mindset completely changed - I started to think entirely about what are the settings to extract those extra pixels - you need IS for sure but you also need higher SS - it isn't that 1/200th isn't enough for a 'good' picture - it is - it is just that I came to the conclusion that I would rather be shooting with faster SS with slightly higher ISOs in order to get the sharpness (there is obviously a tradeoff - but in your situation you had ISO / Aperture room)

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Thank you so much for that information and I have all the time in the world to learn it. I am sure it will take time through trial and error and advise from people like you again I say thanks.

5Dsr was my choice 3 weeks before 5Div; I just knew it wouldn't have the sheer resolving power of the 5Dsr.

I'm leaning the same way, getting a 5DsR to go with my 7D2. Hoping for a 10% refurb sale to drop the price below the current $2999.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.
