I hope to do a backyard experiment with the 500 on a tripod to compare. Heck I may even throw my 1D4 into the mix!

We went peep-shooting this morning! It was a cloudy and drizzly day and everything looked grey! All are huge crops but came out reasonably thanks to the magic of the 500 II +1.4X. All handheld, shot at Jackson Bottom Wetlands, Hillsboro, OR.
