I thought I heard (don't quote me on this) that in some states police cant have this feature for the reasons stated above. When I bought my M&P they asked me if I wanted it with or with out it I bought it with it. John By no means do I have knowledge of every LE agencies policy, but I can't imagine one that issues (or allows officers to carry) weapons that won't fire without the magazine in. I would never allow it, or carry one myself. Also, it's highly unlikely that someone would be able to drop the magazine if they thought the perp was about to win a wrestling match over their gun. I'd be the first to admit that there are way too many cops that aren't safe (or proficient) enough with their duty weapons, but any implication that they commit more AD's than the general public (especially considering the amount of time they spend carrying and manipulating firearms) is just false. It likely seems more prevalent because, when a civilian has an AD that injures (non-fatal) another person, it's a one day news blurb. When a cop injures someone in an AD, it will be front page news, with a weeks worth of follow up stories. Hell, even a proven accidental fatality by a civilian is usually pretty short in the news cycle. Fuji X....BAAAAM! Renders way different than Sony.

They were actually pretty common for a while. Pre-M&P Smith and Wesson pistols had magazine disconnects as a standard feature, and I know that both Colorado State Patrol and Illinois State Police issued those for quite some time. I also think they're a stupid idea, but there you go. I'm not with the ISP, but I think they stopped issuing the old S&W 9mm DA's by the mid 80's, so a little before my time. When I came on the job in 88, I think Browning Hi-Power was their standard issue. I'm pretty sure those were available with a magazine disconnect, but I don't think the ISP issue had them. Biggest problem that came out of that era for them was the under powered Winchester Silvertip 9mm round they were using. Fuji X....BAAAAM! Renders way different than Sony.

I'm likely wrong about the Browning, and maybe they just changed to a new S&W model in 88. I'm certain that's when they made a change, but not certain about the gun. Long time ago. Do you remember if Hi Power mags were compatible with any of the S&W models they carried? Because I could swear at least one trooper I knew carried 4 or 5 extra Hi Power mags from a personally owned gun in his squad with him. Unfortunately, he died of a heart attack over ten years ago, so I can't confirm it with him. Fuji X....BAAAAM! Renders way different than Sony.

I think they carried the S&W 459 for a while, which IIRC (meaning "I think I saw it on Wikipedia once") used magazines that were derived from the BHP. Whether or not they were compatible, I don't know. Any time you start thinking that you're a big shot, try giving commands to someone else's dog.
