Black Skimmers are a favorite of mine. They're perfectly equipped to feed while gliding with ease on their wide wing span just above the surface of the water. Their lower mandible extends beyond the length of its upper to reach into the water where schools of small fish do their best to get out of the way. When contact is made their bill snaps shut so quickly its nearly impossible to see. Their head is usually whipped backward underneath them while they make the grab. They eat on the wing so feeding can continue and no energy is wasted landing and taking off. Their call is similar to the bark of a small dog so there's no mistaking them when they're nearby.

With all that said you'd think that I'd have some flight shots to share. Instead, here are some portrait favorites from the past that I reworked. Long methodical belly crawls get me up close and personal without stressing the birds.

Fantastic images Steve! Great job on capturing the detail on the Skimmer's bill! Really neat stuff.

Great set Steve.

How long did it take you to low crawl up to them?

Thanks Zach, I won't likely see the pose in that last one again. I feel fortunate to have witnessed it.

thaanks Brad. I'll often use the grooves in their bill to help me determine optimal focus.

Thanks Bob. It's been a poor year for them here so I pulled these out and ran them through more current post workflow. I'll bet it won't be long and you'll have them in the viewfinder of that sweet new 1DX. Best of luck.

Great set Steve.

Thanks John. As I recall these weren't all on the same day but at this location my crawls are between 200 and 350 feet. When the tide is down the birds have more real estate to choose from so my distance can be greater. I like when the tide is on the rise because the birds will come toward me to get away from the rising water. The first half of the crawl can go pretty quick but I slow it down as I get closer. On average I'd say it takes me about 45 minutes or so but i have taken over an hour on occasion.
