Check this, tried to film it. This is in S mode with a 1/160sec shutter speed. You can see me pressing the shutter and flash firing quite a bit later. Like I said, this only seems to happen in PASM modes. When I set the camera to Auto or in one of the scene modes, flash (both internal and external) fire immediately like they should. It seems like (in low light) the a6300 is doing some additional metering before firing off the flash which takes some time. This is something the a6000 does NOT do, but I have no idea which setting it could be. I went over all settings and really cannot find anything that could explain this.

This happens with all lenses, tried the Zeiss 24Z, Zeiss 16-70, SEL50 etc... Always same behaviour. When using the a6000, completely different results and flash fires in an instant. It's very apparent that the camera seems to be doing "something". After acquiring focus and pressing the shutter, the screen darkens a bit and then flash fires and picture is taken. Might be some metering setting but I really cannot begin to find it. Also tried setting ISO to a fixed setting, same results.

This is the 2nd a6300 I try, so it cannot be a fault in the camera.

I'm no expert but if you're shooting TTL metering, you are exposing both ambient and for flash so in a low light situation, I would expect a longer shutter to let in more ambient and then the flash would go off. Try putting the flash in manual mode and it should fire right away.

Benefit to using the Smooth Reflections app as opposed to just using BULB or doing a 20-30 sec exposure?

edit: just did some reading on it - seems pretty cool. No use of an ND needed. What's the cost?

$10 I believe in the Sony Playmemories App Store. Just be ready for a headache trying to download it.

While you don't need an ND filter, it's recommended to use one along with the SR app. You'll get better results since the app can produce a stutter in the final image. Great thing about using the app is how clean the final image is. Just expose for the highlights.

I think it's like $10 or so. Cheap!
But, let me address two noise-related reasons why it can still be better than bulb:
1. Because the exposures are shorter you can avoid all long-exposure noise.
2. Because it is combining multiple exposures into a single raw file, even the normal noise in the photo is cleaned up. You can use the app to create the most noise-free images you've ever seen. This is great, because you can intentionally underexpose (to preserve highlights), but recover noise-free shadow details in post.

It's not perfect though. Sometimes the fact that it's a sequence of shots leads to unusual results. Recently I was shooting a lake scene and used the SR app to shoot about 64 frames. Well a duck swam through my scene. Had I used a 10 or 15-stop ND the duck would either be a smooth stroke or completely invisible. But, in my case my image had what looked like a parade of 64 ducks. They were faint, not too visible, but they were there.

It's definitely a must-have for any a7R II user (and whatever other cameras the app is available for).

That said, I also still use my dark ND filters. The SR app is great for water, usually great for clouds, and not so good for moving objects like people, cars, and ducks. :)

It took me forever. They don't know how to make a good app store do they? vmad
I think I was finally able to add the $$$ to my Sony "wallet" and it finally took. Even then there was some hangup with my Sony account or something. Huge pain. I think it took Eddie a long time to get his app too.

that does not seem to be it. It is however very clear that the delay gets worse when using center af, flexible af etc. Only when setting it to "wide" the flash fires almost immediately. But when choosing a small af point, it seems the flash is delayed. Again, same settings on the a6000 and works fine. Also, it seems absolutely wrong that fill flash, rear sync and slow sync behave exactly the same right?

I hesitate in posting this. But, I have long been a huge fan of Singh Ray filters. They always have the best color rendering of any filters I've ever used. Sadly, that performance comes at a huge cost as well. BUT, just in case anyone is interested, they are running a 20% sale until the 14th.

Their "Color Combo" CPL has always been my favorite CPL because it incorporates a color enhancer that does amazing stuff. I just did a quick snap off my front porch - the first is the Singh Ray and the second is the Haida. The Haida sample makes me want to vomit.

BTW, don't let OoDee see this - these crappy snap shots are definitely not up to the 5D III image thread standards! :p

I am going to try to install smooth reflections at some point later this week...finally found a use for it for me...shooting on the bridge, you can't typically shoot LE...the bridge bounces...maybe a series of 10 second shots? Might still get some bounce in there...hmmm...might not work.

You're right...that would unfortunately not work - you'd still end up with a blurry shot. Frustrating thing about shooting from bridges. Last week I was shooting from a wooden deck near a boat launch. Same thing - when anyone walked by I got a blurry result.

(SR5) Leaked! First image of the new Sony 18-110mm f/4.0 G E-mount lens!

QUOTED IMAGE

A trusted source just sent me the image of the new Sony 18-110mm f/4.0 G PZ APS-C E-mount lens! The lens will be announced on Friday 9th September at 9.00am CET and you can follow the video live stream here on SAR.

The new Sony G PZ lens is made for the FS camcorder series and is way more useful on those cameras than the current Sony FE PZ 28-135mm. I have no price info yet.

Source: SonyAlphaRumors (external link)

Was hoping for an FE lens. :-(
