My new birding setup

The Sony a6300 + Canon 100-400L lens make a great combo for me to shoot hummingbirds with. Focus is fast using the Metabones IV adapter. I used AF-C mode and wide AF.

Because of the 1.5 crop factor using this camera, the effective focal length with this combination is 600mm with no minimum aperture penalty and the 24.2mp sensor is larger than my Canon 5D3 (22.3mp).

Looks great. Can you MFA with this rig? What are the advantages over using a Canon crop body? Is it the noise/high ISO performance?

I'm not sure what you mean by MFA but besides the fact that I own the Sony and no longer have a Canon 7D, I love this camera's size, the dynamic range of the sensor and clean high iso files. The last two above were shot at an iso of 5000 for example. The camera has 425 focus point spread over most of the sensor and this helps track moving subjects which it can shoot at 11fps.

Ah yes, with a mirrorless camera, there is no need to MFA.

I do but not with this camera/lens combination. I need to get back into taking bird photographs again. Here is a link to an album of images I've taken of Costas hummingbirds in my yard over time. Many of them are of the same bird who was very much a ham for the camera.

This Costas hummingbird was checking me out. Question was, who'd blink first? The pattern in the background is caused by a decorative design in my cinderblock wall and sunburned bush at the bottom of the frame.
