The 300mm (or even 400mm) lens is great for volleyball, particularly when you have the opportunity to shoot down from a balcony or when the stands get high enough. The dof is quite small so your focus has to be good or you may get one player in focus and another out as in #3. :-(

In this arena, I used a 400mm lens attached to a 1.3 FOVCF camera (1D Mark IV).

There are several tricks to focusing in quick action in volleyball. First, you must anticipate who will hit the ball next so you have enough time to focus on that player before the ball arrives. Other tricks can be found here:
